Lucy Spraggan is an England-born singer/songwriter who rose to fame on U.K. X factor in 2012. After having success on the show, she then went on to become the first contestant of the show to achieve a Top 40 single and album before the live shows were aired. Her ever-popular song “Last Night (Beer Fear)” was one of the standout choices for this tour and a sure fan favourite. Spraggan was welcomed to the O2 Institute in Birmingham on Saturday, 15 November, following her sold out show the previous night in Norwich.
Joined by Molly Warburton, an indie singer/songwriter from Lancaster, and D3LTA, an alternative/electronic group from England/Greece, as the opening acts, this show really was a night fully of treats. Warburton offered an intimate acoustic set and showcased some of the songs in her calibre, along with a new release that she performed for the first time on Saturday night. Warburton’s set really opened the night and set the bar for how the rest of the evening panned out, performing “Twenty Two” along with her latest song, “Better Me.”
D3LTA followed with a high energy set that showcased their expertise instrumentally. Along with main vocals from lead singer Robert Coustas, the group performed “Kids” and “Hot Gun.” D3LTA provided a mixed set from slower tempo songs to high-powered anthems. They’re a special group with a lot of fire-power between the four of them. They really left their mark in Birmingham. They closed their set with “Happy Out Of Love” before welcoming the arrival of the main event, Lucy Spraggan.
The Headliner: Lucy Spraggan
From the moment Spraggan stepped onto the stage, the atmosphere shifted into something emotional and full of infectious energy. She delivered a thoughtful blend of newer songs alongside nostalgic favourites from earlier albums, including songs she wrote as a teenager. Songs such as “Lucky Stars,” “Fight for It,” “Stick the Kettle On,” and “Unsinkable” were just some of the chosen songs from night and they were well received from fans.
The set was described as a “journey,” a fitting summary of the evening as the setlist traced Spraggan’s musical progression from her earliest work to the present day. Performing “Tea & Toast,” one of her earliest songs that she originally wrote at 19 years old, followed by “Other Side of the Moon,” which she wrote about falling in love with her wife, Spraggan shared her feelings with the audience and gave a piece of herself through this performance.
Throughout the performance, Spraggan showcased her musicianship with guitar work, expressive vocals, and her newfound piano skills. She shared the story behind learning the instrument—explaining that she taught herself during the COVID pandemic and still feels nervous playing it live. Something about hearing this story created a warm, intimate connection with the audience as she performed two songs while sat at the piano.
Spraggan closed the set with one of her more upbeat songs, “Run,” from her 2021 album Choices – a song that has surpassed 6.8 million streams on Spotify. Throughout the night, she consistently showed a strong crowd engagement, making the audience feel genuinely involved and reinforcing the sense that this tour was a shared “journey” for both her and her listeners. Spraggan returned to the stage for an encore, delivering a punchy final performance – a great way to end the night, and it certainly finished on a high.
