A night with G Flip in Paris: queer joy, drums, and croissants

Underneath the circus tent of Le Cabaret Sauvage, The Aussie star G Flip wrapped up their brief European run with a triumphant show in Paris on May 30. After several years away from European stages, they returned with a night of sweat, unbelievable vocals and unstoppable energy that left us thrilled.

Polly Money opened the evening with a set that blended dreamy pop textures and introspective singer-songwriter warmth, the perfect way to start the night. The crowd welcomed her warmly as she shared how much she loves playing in Paris. A brief technical hiccup arose, but she handled it like a queen, switching to acoustic songs until the issue was resolved.

Between songs she talked about her new EP T-Shirt Nothing Else, released in March, and played through several tracks from it.

Before leaving, she asked who was ready for G and said how impressed she has been watching them on the last few shows. We knew an amazing set was on the way.

Right before 9 p.m., the lights went out and G’s show intro kicked in. A few seconds later, as the room buzzed with anticipation, the band arrived, followed by G Flip.

They opened their set with three iconic choices.

First came one of their most recognizable songs, “GAY 4 ME” featuring Lauren Sanderson, which immediately set the tone for the night: be gay, dance, scream, live.

For the second song, “Drink Too Much,” G jumped straight into the crowd, catching everyone by surprise. Fans lost their minds but instantly formed a circle around them to create a safe space. It was beautiful to see how respectful the audience was. G invited everyone to jump along with them during the chorus, creating a moment of pure connection that showed just how much they love sharing space with their listeners.

The third track was an acoustic version of an unreleased song called “I don’t wanna regret.”

These three songs made for a powerful and intimate opening to the night.

At one point, G Flip took a moment to connect with the crowd and asked how many people were from Paris. To their surprise, and mine, it turned out that a lot of the audience had traveled to be there, some even from other countries. G laughed and called them “crazy motherfuckers.” They shared that their last name, Flipo, is actually French, from the north of the country, although they admitted they cannot speak French.

They then laid out the house rules for a G Flip show:

• Do not be a dickhead
• We love the LGBTQIA+ community, including trans people, non-binary people, drag queens, and as G said, “whoever you’re fucking, whoever you’re kissing… humhumhum… you get it done! Fuck yeah!”
• Make friends and be kind to people who came by themselves
• If someone faints, make sure to alert the team so they can stop the show and get help
• And most importantly, just have some fun

The show continued with songs like “Good Enough,” “Real Life” and “Hyperfine,” where everyone in the room threw their hands in the air. I was truly blown away by G’s vocal strength, especially during one of the final lines of the song. They held an insanely high and long note on “I just wanna be noticed” that does not even exist in the studio version.

They blessed us with another unreleased acoustic song, “In Another Life,” this time setting a calmer tone in the room.

“This song, it’s more of an emotional song,” G said. “It’s about loss, and for anyone that’s lost someone, whether it’s a partner or a dog, whether it’s the love of your life or anyone who has felt that deep hurt in your heart where you’ve got a gap missing, this goes out to you.”

We could hear G’s voice breaking with emotion during the song, and a few people in the audience were visibly moved as well. They followed with two more emotional tracks, “Lover” and “Rough,” but this time G played the drums during both. That added a burst of energy to the moment, almost making us forget how heavy the lyrics were. It was a perfect blend of vulnerability and power.

Before playing yet another unreleased song (they were really blessing us with exclusives), G explained that this one needed audience participation. They let us know it was a very gay song, about wearing a tool belt with a big ol’ hammer. During the line “you make me feel like a man,” we had to go “huh” and basically hump the air. Then on “goddam,” we had to yell “wow” while doing a classic cowboy lasso move. It was one of the funniest and most memorable parts of the night.

Of course, they played their iconic cover of “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift, which had everyone singing along. That was followed by an astonishing drum solo, just in case anyone needed a reminder of exactly who we came to see.

Right before leaving the stage, G Flip closed their set with “Be Your Man” and once again stepped into the crowd to make sure they could see everyone’s faces.

After they left, the crowd erupted, chanting “G Flip, G Flip, G Flip.” Our star returned for an encore with their iconic new single “Disco Cowgirl,” the moment we had all been waiting for.

But that still wasn’t the end. After thanking everyone for coming, G Flip announced the last part of the show: a tradition where they give away a piece of merch to someone in the audience who has been vibing all night, while the band improvises a song based on a word G chooses that day. Naturally, they picked “croissant.” The band played a joyful, sweet instrumental that felt like a sunny day in Paris.

They decided to give the signed hat to someone in the front row who had actually attended every show on the tour. It also happened to be their birthday, so it just made sense.

They closed the already unforgettable set with my personal favorite, “The Worst Person Alive.” G Flip gave everything they had, and so did the crowd.

They shook hands with people in the front row and handed their drumsticks to a fan. It was a beautiful ending to a night we won’t forget anytime soon. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for their next show in Europe.
