Produced by Los Angeles-based musician Baird, “Donahoo’s Chicken” sees Maxo trading his signature laid-back delivery for something sharper and more confrontational. The accompanying video, once again directed by Vincent Haycock, expands the surreal, cinematic visual world first introduced in the video for Maxo’s earlier single “Human?” and the Mars Is Electric album trailer.
“This is the first time that I really didn’t care,” Maxo shares. “I didn’t approach things so seriously.”
Free from expectations, the album became a portal for confronting difficult truths—family fractures, relationship strain, personal loss, and the disorienting aftermath of innocence.
Mars Is Electric follows two critically praised 2023 releases—Even God Has A Sense of Humor and Debbie’s Son—and marks a sonic evolution for Maxo. No longer beholden to perfectionism, he created freely across a year of experimentation, absorbing inspiration from a vast array of artists including France Joli, Steve Spacek, DJ Quik, Lisha G, and more. The album journeys from foggy introspection to vibrant confidence, delivering some of Maxo’s most dynamic and lyrically nimble music yet.
