After releasing his new single, “Don’t Let Me Go,” a month ago, Tom Odell made his listeners even happier (or sadder, depending on how you experience his heart-wrenching discography) with the announcement of his upcoming album A Wonderful Life, out September 5. He also shared a second single from the album, “Don’t Cry, Put Your Head On My Shoulder” as well as its own music video.
Tom released his incredible last album, Black Friday, just over a year ago and hasn’t stopped since. He began writing new songs right after its release and spent nine months fine-tuning lyrics for the new record on tour buses and trains, away from the stable home life he’d created. “I labored over every line,” says Odell. “I went in on those words every day, just refining and refining and refining. I can be a bit obsessive, and the obsessive part of me is probably the worst part of me and the bit that I would pay so much money for a therapist to tell me how to lose. But it’s also the bit that does not give up on songs.”
A Wonderful Life was written partly in reaction to the relentless news cycle and “the sense, almost every week, that the world is ending in some capacity—which it is, for some people.” Odell’s lyrics channel the despair, frustration and helplessness in the modern world.
As much as Tom’s music aches, it also comforts. There’s a tenderness in his songwriting that feels like it’s reaching out to hold you right when you need it most. He has a way of turning heartbreak into something strangely soothing, like a mirror for your own emotions but softened by melody. His lyrics don’t just tell stories, they sit with you, they linger. “Don’t Let Me Go” is a perfect example of this emotional duality. It’s vulnerable and raw, but it carries an undercurrent of hope, or at least connection, that makes it feel like less of a cry into the void and more like someone whispering, I’ve felt this too.
“Don’t cry, put your head on my shoulder
Take all the time that you need
God knows I’m gonna show you
It’s never as bad as it seems
It hurts right now but it won’t forever
We’re gonna get through it together
You’re doing your best
And what more can you do?”

He recorded A Wonderful Life at Church Studios, HOXA, and RAK Studios’ legendary Room One, a space steeped in history, where iconic albums from Radiohead, The Pogues, Ultravox and others once took shape. Stepping into that creative lineage, Odell embraced a raw, organic approach. He and his band recorded everything live, capturing performances in real time with instruments bleeding into one another. It was a deliberate move toward authenticity, prioritizing emotion and imperfection over polish. The result is a sound that feels intimate and immediate, as if you’re in the room with them, catching every breath, every note as it happens.

You might think that’s all, but Tom also revealed his next headlining tour across Europe and the U.K. this fall. He’ll be stopping at major arenas, including London’s O2 Arena, Paris’ Accor Arena, Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome, Berlin’s Uber Arena, and more. For fans in North America, Odell will embark on a special run of intimate shows across the U.S. and Canada — rare club performances that offer a unique opportunity to see him in some of the smallest venues he’s played in years.
In the meantime, Tom is still on the road with Billie Eilish as part of her European tour and will join The Lumineers this summer for select U.S. dates on their “Automatic World Tour.” Clearly, he’s not slowing down anytime soon.
