Lola Young returns with new single and video “One Thing”

Lola Young, known for her unapologetic lyrics and amazing musicality, released her new single “One Thing” on Friday, May 16. “One Thing” opens with dreamy guitar lines and a hypnotic dub rhythm, creating the perfect backdrop for Lola Young’s commanding voice and fearless spoken word flow. Speaking about her new song, Lola shares, “It’s a song that on first listen sounds like I’m talking about one thing. Sex. Which I am, of course. However sex in itself is never about one thing.”.

The single arrives with an accompanying music video directed by Dave Meyers. Lola takes center stage throughout, lip-syncing in a series of dynamic settings: a first date, an all-girls classroom, a boxing ring where she remains undefeated against ex-lovers, and even making out with herself for good measure. The video’s rapid-fire editing injects a vibrant, hypnotic energy. A standout moment features a desaturated sequence following a fight scene in the ring, offering a stark visual contrast. The overall artistry of the video is simply remarkable.

Lola shares, “I wanted to make a song and music video that is thought-provoking and highlights sex being both a fun and light thing, not always meaningful, as well as showing how gender roles can be reversed.”

Lola Young has surpassed 1 billion global streams and continues to rise, driven by the massive success of her platinum-certified debut single “Messy” which topped charts across Pop, Alternative, and Hot AC, and held the U.K.’s No. 1 spot for four weeks. She’s the first female artist since Lorde to debut at No. 1 on both Pop and Alternative charts. Her critically acclaimed 2024 album, This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway, earned her three Ivor Novello nominations and a BRIT Award nod, while “Messy” was recently nominated for an AMA.

Lola debuted at Coachella last month, premiering “One Thing,” and has since collaborated with Tyler, The Creator and Lil Yachty. Named a Rolling Stone “Future 25” artist, she’s performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and spoken with NPR and The Los Angeles Times. Up next, she’ll open for Billie Eilish in Paris and perform at major festivals including Glastonbury and All Things Go.
