Coming to El Paso, Texas, this next week: South Korean rock group Rolling Quartz on their second U.S. tour. They have made a name for themselves in South Korea, where they started in 2019 performing in clubs around the Hongdae region of Seoul. They kept their momentum going in 2020 during the COVID pandemic by using social media, getting their name and music out to their fans. They became so popular in South Korea they released the singles in 2020, “Random” and “Blaze,” and they released, in 2022, their first album, titled Fighting, which in 2022 made it to the top 5 U.S. rock albums on iTunes — the first time a Korean indie band made it on that list. Then, in 2024, they released their second album, Victory.
Band members Ja Young, vocalist; Hyun Jung, guitarist; Iree, guitarist; Arem, bassist; and Yeong Eun, drummer, all bring their own flair to the table—from Young giving each song her all (if you watch she is out of breath at the end of a song), Jung is the shredder while Iree is a more rhythm-and-blues style. Arem brings that dark, heavy beat, while Eun is a tiny ball of energy that holds and keeps the songs together. They create their own songs but have also become known to do covers of major hard rock songs and blowing people away with the quality of their performance.
Many people have heard of K-pop groups out there, but K-rock is taking the South Korean scene by storm, thanks to Rolling Quartz hitting the stage in 2019. I will be covering their concert for The Concert Chronicles on Tuesday at the Rockhouse Diva Bar in El Paso, Texas — the house that rocks. Looking forward to a fantastic night of music. From doing my research before the show, I have become a Diadem — Rolling Quartz name for their fans.
