CELEBRATING FIFTY YEARS OF THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

The Rocky Horror Picture Show celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. This cult classic, known for blending science fiction, horror, comedy, and musical elements, reshaped the idea of midnight cinema and gave rise to a worldwide community of devoted fans. Since its release in 1975, the film has grown into something far greater than a movie. It became a cultural event, a symbol of self-expression, and the spark behind an enduring movement that continues to thrive today.

When The Rocky Horror Picture Show first arrived on screen, it didn’t just entertain, it invited audiences to become part of the show. Adapted from Richard O’Brien’s stage musical, the film blended camp, rebellion, and glam-rock energy into something entirely unique. With its wildly expressive cast and electrifying soundtrack, it quickly attracted a devoted following. Midnight screenings became full-blown rituals, where fans dressed as their favorite characters, shouted lines in unison, and performed scenes in front of the screen. What began as a niche phenomenon evolved into a cultural tradition that still thrives today, making the film a living, breathing piece of cinema history.

Fifty years later, The Rocky Horror Picture Show remains as vibrant and subversive as ever. Its message of self-acceptance, sexual freedom, and joyful nonconformity still resonates with new generations who discover it in theaters, on stage, or online. Whether it’s someone’s first time or their hundredth, each screening offers a space where difference is celebrated and community is built through shared experience. The film also holds a lasting place in the history of drag, with characters like Dr. Frank-N-Furter inspiring countless performers and helping to bring gender fluidity and theatrical self-expression into the spotlight. In fact, I first discovered Rocky Horror through drag — and I know I’m not the only one.

More than a cult classic, it has become a rite of passage, a bridge between art and identity, and a timeless invitation to step out of the ordinary and into a world where everyone is free to dance, sing, and be unapologetically themselves.

To mark its 50th anniversary, a newly restored and remastered version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is being released in stunning 4K Ultra HD, complete with the reveal of a brand-new anniversary logo. The restoration was led by the Walt Disney Studios Restoration team, who spent ten months carefully scanning and preserving the original film. Every frame has been treated with exceptional attention to detail, resulting in a version that offers unmatched clarity and vibrancy. The update also includes a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track, giving the iconic soundtrack greater depth and dimension. And for longtime fans and purists, the original mono audio has been fully restored, allowing audiences to hear the film exactly as it was experienced when it first premiered fifty years ago.

“It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many,” says Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration & Library Management. “Bringing The Rocky Horror Picture Show to life in 4K allows us to honor its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both longtime fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.”

“When The Rocky Horror Picture Show was first released, no one thought it would be around very long let alone…50 years,” says producer Lou Adler. “What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.”
