American Sunrise: An Indigenous art installation

Indigenous Futurism, Place and Kinship are the guiding themes of the American Sunrise installation which depicts the tales of intergenerational artistic expressions amongst the Native Americans and their connectedness with the natural world

The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, a haven for stunning architecture and a growing art collection, will be opening the exhibition to the public from November 9, 2024-March 23, 2025. The showcased art spans over 150 years of creativity and features several mediums including photographs, paintings, beadwork, basketry and pottery by over 30 prominent artists. Additionally, the artists featured in American Sunrise will be representing the Navajo, Cherokee, Muscogee, Osage, Hopi-Tewa, Taos, Kiowa and Chemehuevi Nations amongst many other. American Sunrise is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the expansion of diverse American art and the roots of our nation.

The art forms featured in American Sunrise provide us visual and textile art forms depict a story of adaptability, resilience, and innovation. Native American art forms represent the connection between the people and their land, and our innate ability to weave alongside the natural resources which abound.

Jordan Poorman Cocker is the curator of Indigenous Art and NAGPRA officer at the museum and Ashley Holland is the director of curatorial affairs at Art Bridges Foundation. The museum welcome all to enjoy a free artist panel featuring Teri Greeves (Kiowa), Jeri Redcorn (Caddo), Kelly Church, (Ottawa / Potawatomi), and Jane Osti (Cherokee Nation), curated by Cocker and Holland.
