Dev Hynes, the singer better known by his moniker Blood Orange, has had a busy year — he worked on two of the year’s biggest releases, Lorde’s Virgin and Turnstile’s Never Enough, supported both artists on tour, played festivals around the world from Camp Flog Gnaw to Pitchfork Festival Paris, and released an album of his own titled Essex Honey — and now he’s rounding out the year with a six-show run at Brooklyn Steel in his home base of New York City.

After spending much of the last few months sharing huge stages with other powerhouse artists, there was no better way to return home than by playing intimate shows surrounded by the most devoted fans. The in-the-round stage was like a floral oasis in the middle of the venue, the performance taking place on it bringing warmth to the winter night with Blood Orange’s lush soundscapes. Dev Hynes showed off his multitude of talents throughout the show, switching between cello, keys, and guitar, alongside his voice. He was accompanied by a whole group of talented musicians, including Eva Tolkin, Tariq Saleem Al-Sabir, and Ian Isiah, all of whom are featured on Essex Honey. Local band voyeur also treated the audience to an opening set of hazy rock music before Blood Orange took the stage.

All of the Brooklyn Steel shows were also recorded for limited CDs, burned immediately to be available just after each night’s show so fans could bring a piece of their concert memories home with them and relive it indefinitely. As 2025 quickly comes to a close, these shows were an opportunity for Blood Orange and fans to look back and celebrate what they’ve achieved, and to look forward in anticipation of what the next year holds.
