Cavetown, aka Robin (Robbie) Skinner, provided an intimate space for a small acoustic performance and Q&A at The Scribble in honor of announcing his new album Running With Scissors.
The Scribble, which is located in Los Angeles, California, encompassed a warm and inviting atmosphere that perfectly accompanied Robbie’s soothing vocals. During my exploration, I learned that this venue is a nonprofit counseling center that offers sliding-scale therapy to those in need. They prioritize community and mental health, which makes it a very fitting spot for Cavetown to perform. Robbie is also known to emphasize the importance of mental health and often advocates for his community through projects such as the This Is Home Project, which aims to support LGBTQ+ youth.

As the doors opened, fans quickly flooded in and filled the venue with big smiles and warm anticipation. A loud roar of cheers washed over the crowd as Cavetown made his way on stage.
He started off his set with “Juliet,” and explained that while the song was written for someone in his past, it still holds new meaning for him in his current relationship.
Next was an 8-bit-inspired love song from his new album called “Rainbow Gal.” The song paints a colorful visual that reflects the comfort and sense of safety he finds in his partner.
After “Rainbow Gal,” Robbie slowed it down by playing “Wasabi,” which encapsulates the deep feeling of missing someone, even if only for a brief moment.
Following “Wasabi” was “Tarmac,” which was co-written with Orla Gartland for his new album. “Tarmac” is about having conflicting feelings that stir up intrusive thoughts in their wake. He explores topics such as longing for something he’s told he can’t have and even goes as far as stating that tarmac, which is asphalt, is sweet.
He finished off his acoustic set with the first song released from his new album, “Baby Spoon.” “Baby Spoon” was inspired by his partner and is a testament to the emotional support within their relationship. The song displays deep levels of vulnerability and self-acceptance.

Robbie then transitioned into the Q&A part of the night. He picked up his setlist and turned it around for some pre-picked questions that were sent in by the audience before the show started. Below were a few of the questions with paraphrased answers:
Q: Many artists face creative blocks at some point. Do you have techniques to overcome those moments when inspiration is hard to find?
A: Art, listening to samples on splice to get inspiration, talking to friends
Q: What are your favorite adventure time characters and why!
A: Tree trunks and BMO
Q: What is an activity you do either with your friends or by yourself that you never seem to get bored of?
A: Art/doodling

The Q&A concluded a very special night, and on the way out, fans were given a special postcard signed by Robbie with art from the new album.
