“Breaking The Fourth Wall” A Ski Mask The Slump God concert

When booking the Ski Mask The Slump God concert, I knew It would be high energy hardcore fans, but would’ve never guessed that it would be like this.

I arrived to The NorVa in Norfolk, Virginia, around 6 p.m., doors didn’t open until 7 p.m.. Typically, I wait in my car until it’s close to time, but something told me to walk to the venue as soon as I arrived, and I’m glad I did. The line stretched around the entire block! You couldn’t even see the back of the line from the front of the line because of how long it was! Safe to say this was a sold-out show. While waiting, I met fans who had travelled 12 hours from Florida just to see Ski Mask The Slump God. As it got closer and closer to 7 p.m., fans were getting antsy to be let in, but unfortunately, the time kept getting pushed back later and later. We eventually got let into the venue around 8 p.m. – Ski Mask was supposed to go on at 8.

Around 8:45, Ski Mask’s DJ hit stage. The energy was insane! The barricade shook back and forth as fans got hyped up for Ski Mask’s appearance. Once it was 9 p.m., the venue went dark, fans screamed at the top of their lungs chanting his name. Ski Mask The Slump God came running out to one of his hit songs, “Shibuya,” from his album 11th Dimension. You could feel the song in your soul, ear plugs were no match for this concert!

There were five other photographers in the pit with me. Originally we were all told only first three songs, but with how high energy this show was, security allowed us to stay because you physically couldn’t exit the pit. Fans pushed back and forth, crushing each other against the brick walls and barricade. While taking pictures center stage, I could faintly hear a girl yelling “help” and fans calling for security. The obnoxious amount of people made it almost impossible to see where it was coming from, security couldn’t find her. In between the heads of rows of fans, I made eye contact with her and she gave me this look that shook my soul. Any rightful person would’ve done what I did next!

I stood on the barricade, reaching for her hands, pulling her out as much as I could, flagging down security while fans helped me push her out of this deadly situation. While standing up there, grabbing her, I turned around and made eye contact with Ski Mask The Slump God. Right then and there he stopped the show! “Breaking the fourth wall” as some would say. This was completely out of my nature and you could even say unprofessional. In my heart though, I knew I had to help her, especially since security couldn’t find her. Once we safely got her out, Ski Mask looked at me asking if we were good, in which I replied giving him a thumbs up and the show proceeded.

Throughout the rest of the show, he would come in front of my camera and make eye contact with me, giving me good shots and angles. In my eyes, it was a thank you for preventing a horrible situation. Ski Mask then hopped into the photo pit and gave fans autographs and pictures. He played a slower song to try to calm the energy and give fans a second to breathe.

By the end of the show, around 10 p.m., Ski Mask The Slump God told the crowd that he would be coming outside after the show – this created CHAOS! Fans rushed out of the building, pushing each other to be the first to meet him. I waited, taking pictures of this insane scene. By 11:30 p.m., a fraction of the crowd had dissipated. Ski Mask came outside the side gate, signing things and taking pictures one last time!

This was a show I truly will never forget. Since that night, I’ve had fans reaching out to me, thanking me for helping that girl who could’ve lost her life that night. They were very appreciative to have me not only taking pictures of them, but for making sure they were safe that night!
