DEVO brings the energy despite stormy delay at Austin show

On Saturday night, November 1, the storm tried to stop DEVO, but even two hours of rain delays couldn’t wash away their energy. Doors kept getting pushed back as lightning lit up the sky and fans waited under umbrellas, refusing to leave. Once the skies finally cleared, the band hit the stage at Germania Insurance Amphitheater, as part of their co-headlining tour with The B-52‘s, and instantly turned the crowd into a dancing sea of red energy dome hats.

They opened with “Don’t Shoot (I’m a Man),” as a reel of old DEVO footage and funky, vintage graphics filled the giant screens. The moment the first beat hit, the soaked crowd exploded into dance. Robot moves, jumps, and arms waving, it was pure chaos after all the anticipation. Red energy domes were everywhere, glowing across the crowd like a sea of nostalgia. After a few songs, Mark Mothersbaugh, the singer of DEVO, went side-stage and grabbed a few red hats to throw into the crowd, and people went wild. The band originally came out in black outfits, but switched into their iconic yellow suits during “Uncontrollable Urge.” By the end of the song, they were tearing off pieces of their suits and throwing them around the stage and into the audience.

Between songs, a chant broke out, “are we not men, we are DEVO,” and the band leaned right into it. Towards the end of the set, Mark came into the crowd and sang it with everyone, pointing the mic towards fans to shout it back.

Even after the delay, they didn’t cut corners. They gave it everything, powering through a full set that felt both nostalgic and electric. The night ended with the words Fight The Power glowing across the screen as they walked off, leaving the Austin crowd screaming for more.

No rain, no delay, nothing could stop DEVO. Just proof that after all these years, they’re still not men, they are DEVO.
