Indigo De Souza and Mothe @ Webster Hall

On Monday, October 27, Indigo De Souza traveled to New York City to play a packed-show at Webster Hall on her Precipice Tour. Accompanying her was Mothe, an alt-pop artist who gave a performance that felt a bit like a fever dream. From the moment they introduced themselves (“Mothe, like the bug, with an e at the end. Hell yeah!”), it was clear the audience was in for something strange, though not bad.

Their heavy use of auto-tune at the start had me blinking in disbelief, but soon enough, Mothe peeled things back to reveal a genuinely impressive voice beneath all the glitchy shimmer. Her energy was absolutely unmatched, jumping across the stage, kicking her leg high in the air, and giving the audience perfectly timed shoulder shimmies. She was freaky in all the best ways. Mothe quickly won over the crowd song by song, even bringing Indigo out mid-set for a chaotic burst of dancing before carrying on the rest of their set solo.

Indigo De Souza opened with an airy track called “Be My Love” and immediately wrapped Webster Hall in an atmosphere that felt weightless and simultaneously filled to the brim with love. She performed 18 songs from all four of her albums and took the audience through a story of human emotion, purposefully tracing the feelings of pleasure, pain, grief, heartbreak, and everything in between.

Her vocals, albeit soft and sweet, coursed through the venue, and the crowd grew more and more excited with every passing track. Fans sang along to nearly every word, holding each other, swaying to the beat, like they were treating the concert like a communal therapy session. Indigo and Mothe’s performances proved how beautifully sincere and relatable indie music can still be, and I, for one, am excited to catch them again.
