The Concert Chronicles got their chance to shoot coverage of Catie Turner during her tour stop at Trans Pecos in Ridgewood, Queens, New York. This is our experience:
For the photographer myself, it was a pretty interesting experience, especially considering I’ve never heard of the artist prior to the night. Commuting to the venue was a relatively light drive, as we enter closer to the venue, what started off as a few people at the door, turned to people swiftly coming by as it got darker. Lights inside the venue accompanied, and Catie’s bandmates, and the opener Chloe Southern, were able to accommodate with soundcheck. Overall, pretty softening, fairly simple, waiting for the action to begin. Tables of merch, both containing Chloe’s and Catie’s merch, stacked up and there were high piles. Fans have kept up with the artist since her debut audition on “American Idol,” which was a shared revelation among most fans. Some had discovered her through quarantine in 2020, with her single “God Must Hate Me” being a viral song throughout the time, and some stumbled upon the star more recently because of their relative or loved one or just the sheer joy of tagging along for a night out in the city. Overall, there were smiles and excitement for the acclaimed artist throughout the room.
First was Chloe Southern, the opener of the show. Though most of the crowd were welcomed and introduced to the artist for the first time in Trans Pecos, fans didn’t fall short of supporting Southern and making her feel seen and welcomed. A very somber, quiet vibe, her vocals filled in the atmosphere powerfully. The set lasted about 30 minutes before Catie captivated, but it definitely helped to entice the fans in preparation. Her strokes accompanied as a friend during her performance with the guitar, and she definitely has a way to go with her music, but I expect to see her take on bigger stages at some point soon.
Then came Catie Turner, the artist everybody waited for. The moment she arrived, screams came out and happiness rippled, fans singing word for word to her songs for most of the set. Songs such as “Home,” “Prom Queen,” “Love on the Moon” were all filled with the fan’s adoration shaped over the years, and her band mates – Lily on the drums and Noah on the bass – didn’t fail to support the vocals of the singer with luminance. The light surrounding did an extra great job and it made for a more or less intimate performance; fans felt very heartfelt and close to the artist, very present and content the fans were, you even felt yourself tied knit to the artist at times.
Overall, the performance was outstanding and Catie’s presence was show-stopping, especially in a greatly known small venue as Trans Pecos. The cherished space was filled to the brim with energy, and it was a show that, from Chloe to Catie, you felt the intimacy, the emotion, the love, the passion, from the fans to the singers to the venue. The night definitely had its spark, and it was a show well-worth securing tickets early for.
