Killgurl’s new single, “Julie’s Lunch,” is out now!

NEW ARTIST ALERT! Killgurls just signed to Adventure Cat Records and have made their label debut with the single “Julie’s Lunch.” Their sound is unique and mesmerizing right off the bat. The intricate bass notes paired with the gruff vocals have got me hooked.

I love the contrast between the verses and chorus in sound. The way it’s rougher sounding after each verse, and yet the transitions are smooth throughout. I almost feel like there’s something I’m missing about the lyrics and overall message of the song. I’m going to be honest—if this song is referencing something, it’s going right over my head.

However, when you have the lyrics in front of you alongside a song, it changes things drastically. Sometimes, songs end up becoming darker than what you interpreted before seeing the lyrics. A great example of this is Hot Mulligan. Their songs are the ultimate sad Midwest emo vibes, but on a listen, they’re catchy and more upbeat than the words suggest.

Similarly, this song gives me that feeling. It has a repetitive guitar hook and head-thrashing vibes, but the lyrics tell a different story—particularly with the lines, “She wants him, leaves him, needed him gone,” and then, “He wants her, leaves her, needed her gone.” Is this a couple that can’t be together? Why does it mention “Ma,” and who are they?

This song is so mysterious, and I love it—especially how it closes out by repeating the line, “I can’t have anymore sympathy,” which just makes me wonder who the storyteller is and what they are trying to say.

I don’t know too much about this group, as they are just starting to emerge into the music scene, but I can tell you that they are on my radar. I cannot wait to see what stories they bring to us next and where they’ll strike. Alongside “Julie’s Lunch,” they offer two other singles on streaming platforms, and they carry similar vibes. So if you enjoy this song, be sure to check out their other music, follow them on social media, and then we just wait—we wait to see what’s coming next.
