Bad Suns brings the Acceleratour to NYC’s Irving Plaza

Fans crowded into a sold-out Irving Plaza last Thursday night for an escape. Coming in from the monotony of work, school, and daily life, they entered into the effervescent world of Bad Suns. The Los Angeles-based trio is in the midst of a worldwide tour aptly named the “Acceleratour,” in support of their fifth album Accelerator. The album title couldn’t be a better descriptor of their current trajectory; the band has come a long way since their 2014 debut, Language & Perspective. The last several years have been a period of personal growth and change for the band, as they regrouped as a trio following the departure of guitarist Ray Libby, and with frontman Christo Bowman recently becoming a father. These changes have not slowed down the band’s career, but instead helped them approach it with greater intention and confidence. The album contains some of Bad Suns’ most personal and introspective songwriting yet, but even in the depths of its storytelling, it never loses sight of the band’s defining optimism and indie-pop shine.

That optimism is exactly what makes a Bad Suns show so fun: Bowman encouraged the crowd to put their dancing shoes on, and the audience followed his lead excitedly, from the first notes of “Slow Karma” to the sing-along chorus of “Daft Pretty Boys” that closed out the show. They play with the precision and natural confidence of a band with over a decade’s experience, all while bringing bright and rejuvenating energy to the stage. Bad Suns is anything but complacent, and it surely helps to have fans who are along for the ride, receiving the new songs with all the same enthusiasm as the fan-favorites. After an uplifting set from Yot Club, recognizable for their mega-viral hit “YKWIM?,” the audience was ready for wherever the night would take them. Bad Suns made magic on the Irving Plaza stage that night— an intimate connection between artist and audience, a triumph of their enduring creativity, a declaration that they’re here to stay, ever “searching for some higher ground.”
