“There’d be no Elbow without Radiohead… A lot of bands shy away from it, a lot of bands wouldn’t admit to Radiohead being an influence, but they’re one of our biggest,” vocalist Guy Garvey said to Gigwise in their early March 2008 article. From hits like The Bends and Hail to the Thief, Elbow doesn’t shy away from hailing Radiohead as their biggest influence. So, as a tribute, I thought to myself, why not incorporate a dose of Radiohead influence into their pictures from the show at Roadrunner on October 3?
“I would say until Hail To The Thief, every album astonished me, like, that literally floored me. Literally. I’m lying there, astonished, unable to breathe.” – Guy.
But like other bands, Elbow’s influences are more than one-sided. From alt-rock, indie rock, and art rock to dream pop, Brit-pop, and indie pop, Elbow doesn’t shy away from just about any genre they can find. Sensitive and pleasant Guy Garvey is the lead singer, lyricist, and most recognizable member of the Mercury Award-winning band.
A band that has accomplished amazing feats, including ten albums in twenty-one years and not swaying away from more.
Roadrunner, an amazing venue and, frankly, the nicest all-around venue I have been to in the Boston area, served as the platform for Raavi and Elbow. Raavi, a local singer-songwriter now residing in New York City—to the dismay of the Boston Red Sox fans in the crowd—set the tone with her absolutely breath-taking vocals. Then, at promptly 9 p.m., Elbow showed Boston just what Brit-pop was: a poetic and absolutely otherworldly experience. It was my pleasure to be a part of that experience, even if I left early for my midnight dinner.
