State Champs releases new music video for latest single, “Common Sense”

State Champs surprised everyone by suddenly coming out with a brand new banger about three weeks ago. It’s so good. I’m kind of mad at them because I can’t travel to go to any of their upcoming shows — they’re unfortunately not even remotely close to me. Boo hiss! I hope this means that a tour is coming up very soon that is more accommodating to everyone, since this is supposed to be a short run. Fingers crossed, people!

Anyways, their latest release, “Common Sense,” has received rave reviews — I haven’t seen a negative comment, personally. I know that State Champs brings it, and vocalist Derek DiScanio knows what the fans want.

This music video takes place in a house where we see this couple sharing almost a whirlwind of a romance, but with some conflicts. It’s clear that there are cracks between these two individuals. I really appreciate bands that take time to create more than music for the visuals, and you can see a story play out that lines up with the lyrics.

There are paralleled montage scenes of love but also fights that mimic the words of the song. Especially the line — I really like this line — “I saw your colors but watched them fade.” There were colors: something colorful, bright, hopeful, but over time they faded. Colors fade to black and white, which, contrary to what many believe, are not actually considered colors. Black and white are the absence of color, which means they are empty. This relationship at one point was happy, but in the end faded to feelings of loneliness despite being together. Like the chorus sings, “We never had a sense in common, cause I was never what you wanted,” neither of them had the common sense to end it even though it was just an endless time of darkness. The play back and forth of good times reminded them that maybe it could work out, but were repeatedly reminded it would not. In the end, there was just misery.

I don’t really watch most music videos, but I really enjoyed how this one worked within the lyrics and seeing the band have fun rocking out during the scenes. The band shared that this music video was very personal to them, and they chose the perfect director to bring their ideas to life. Overall, definitely a winner in my book.

Currently, you can catch them on tour with A Day to Remember and Yellowcard, but then in November they will be playing a small series of shows before wrapping up that month at Warped Tour in Orlando, Florida. We all know that one new single means a wave of new music is coming, so be sure to follow them on their social media platforms to stay in the loop!
