Calling All Captains releases lead single in anticipation of their new album

Canadian punk rockers Calling All Captains have announced that their album, The Things That I’ve Lost, will come out in January. This album features seven tracks, and you can stream one of them now! Just recently, “A New Type of Grey” was put out on all streaming platforms to hype up fans for what’s to come next year. You can also watch the official music video on YouTube.

Vocalist Luc Gauthier says that this new song touches on the in-between feelings of looking at the world through black and white, and choosing to focus on one’s own weaknesses creates a lens that makes one look at things in black and white. He says that holding on to one’s own dreams makes for hope in a black-and-white universe.

I think that it is such a thoughtful way to view things. The “Is the glass half empty or half full?” is such a big debate because it designates you as pessimistic or optimistic, but it’s so hard to stay one or the other. Granted, being pessimistic is an “easier” way to think about life, but expecting the worst is just thinking bad on everything. Life is full of ups, downs, mistakes, wins — but most importantly, perseverance. Just continuing the fight no matter what makes you a winner, and losing one moment does not make it a weakness. It just means you need to get right back up and try again.

Everything is not just black and white; there is the grey in between, which is kind of the whole point to this song. The grey area is not a bad thing — it’s a chance to find a new way that might be better, or at the very least, different.

I love the line, “Can I truly be happy for me?” It hits because we are always seeking self-validation, but we so often forget that our own opinion matters too. Just because one person said something about us does not make it true, and just because someone said that doing this thing will make us happy does not make it a fact. If you cannot find your own personal faith and happiness for you, nothing will fill that gap. And that’s what this “grey area” is in the song, “A new kind of hope for me.”

I look forward to seeing what else Calling All Captains come out with, and I know I’ve missed them playing in Milwaukee TWICE now, so please come back!

Anyways, go stream “A New Type of Grey” until the numbers break and catch them on a Canadian tour RIGHT NOW. Check out the poster below for dates.
