Alexander Stewart releases “Friends Don’t” featuring Lauren Spencer Smith

Over the last four months, Canadian singer-songwriter Alexander Stewart has slowly been revealing what to expect of his upcoming sophomore album What if?, to be released on October 24. Following the release of singles “Here Again,” “Blame On You,” and “Scared of Myself,” Alexander gave fans another taste last Friday, September 19, when he released “Friends Don’t” featuring Lauren Spencer Smith. The piano ballad narrates the feeling of being in love with a friend, the little things you notice about them, and the ways in which you act differently around them.

The previous releases were very well received by the public. “Blame On You” was named one of Rolling Stone’s Songs You Need To Know and “Here Again” has already been streamed over 3.5 million times. Having co-written all twelve songs on the album, Alexander described “Friends Don’t” as one of his favourite songs he’s ever written.

“I wrote it about what it’s like to navigate a complicated relationship and harbor those unspoken feelings and pain one experiences in trying to keep something going despite knowing it’s never going to work… something I think so many of us have experienced. The song already had so much emotion in it, but Lauren’s voice takes it to a whole new level. She and I have developed such a special friendship over the years from touring together and both of us living in LA, and I couldn’t have asked for a better friend to be on this song with me.”

At just 26 years old, Alexander is well on his way to becoming an international superstar. The viral single “I Wish You Cheated” from his debut album Bleeding Heart gained over 45 million views on Tiktok. This led to performing on national TV, as well as his first JUNO Award and MTV VMA nominations. After touring with Charlie Puth, Benson Boone, and Lauren Spencer Smith, he brought his own headlining tour, the “Bleeding Heart Tour,” to multiple continents with a total of nearly 40 shows. After releasing What if? on October 24, he will get back on the road to bring his new album to European stages.
