U.K. born singer, songwriter, and producer Cavetown (Robin Skinner) has officially announced his next album Running With Scissors, set for release January 16 via Futures Music Group. Alongside the news, he’s dropped a brand new single and video, “Rainbow Gal,” a glowing, synth tinged love song inspired by his relationship. Layered with eight-bit textures and glitchy vocal flourishes, the track captures the grounding comfort of love even across distance.
“‘Rainbow Gal’ is like a light display turned into a song, she brings all the color into my life,” Skinner explains.
Cavetown’s story began with DIY uploads from his bedroom in Cambridge, eventually snowballing into billions of streams, six RIAA Platinum singles, and a reputation as one of the most resonant voices of his generation. His music, equal parts vulnerable lofi beginnings and expansive indie pop, has reached millions around the world, creating a community that’s followed him through global touring, festival stops at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, and Lollapalooza, and runs with acts like AJR, Pierce the Veil, and Mother Mother.
With Running With Scissors, Cavetown turns the lens inward. Written after a two year healing process, the album confronts family history, inherited patterns, and the work of choosing what to carry forward. It’s a braver, sharper body of work, carrying the familiar warmth of his earlier songs while introducing bolder edges and rawer emotions. “I want them to enter this new era with me and not feel like it’s for kids. Because I’m not a kid anymore,” says Skinner. “I want it to feel like we’re moving forward together.”
The record arrives on the heels of “Baby Spoon,” his recent single paired with an intimate, dreamlike video. Across the tracklist, Skinner threads together themes of growth, masculinity, identity, and connection while digging into heavier realities like anxiety, self-doubt, and navigating life as a trans artist. Sonically, the album moves between quiet acoustic moments, hyperpop flashes, and even math rock edges, stretching his voice further than ever before. “I wanted to make myself sound more brave,” he adds. “And I wanted to impress people with my voice, like, ‘wow, he’s actually got some pipes.’”
Outside of music, Cavetown continues to lead community efforts, raising over $650,000 for LGBTQ+ organizations through his “This Is Home” initiative.
“Rainbow Gal” and “Baby Spoon” are streaming everywhere now. Running With Scissors is out January 16. Preorders are live.
