Lola Young, 24 year old singer-songwriter from South East London, has been blasting through the alt pop music scene since her platinum-certified No. 1 single “Messy” went viral on social media. At such a young age, Lola has given a voice to a wide range of fans; with tens of millions of monthly streamers Lola’s music has had the ability to reach anyone experiencing the pangs of heart ache.
“I want to be me, is that not allowed?” This one line has given over 600,000 people a way of expressing themselves on instagram reels. Clearly relatable. Lola is back with another emotionally charged single “SPIDERS” off of her forthcoming album I’m Only F**king Myself, due out September 19.
Much like “Messy,” “SPIDERS” is a perfect example of Lola’s intense range and deep lyricism. The song begins with melodic and controlled tenderness, but builds and builds until Lola explodes into a powerhouse of raspy belting. This combination delivers a powerful and emotional song. It appears to represent being afraid of losing someone you care about dearly, but underneath, it is about facing your fears and realizing they aren’t as scary as you had first built them up to be. Much like the almost-universal fear of spiders, which can truly be paralyzing for some people, but when stripped down, the fear is really about something else and possibly not as scary as you thought.
Lola shares, “Sometimes you want to kill what you’re most scared of in life, but when you actually face up to it, it’s really not as scary as you thought it would be.” A really powerful representation for dealing with anything in your life that you are struggling with; often times it’s really just fear itself that we are scared of AND in control of.
Lola’s latest achievements have included performing at MTV’s VMA’s, where she was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Song for “Messy,” as well as a featured interview with The New York Times and a cover of Elle Magazine UK on their 40th anniversary issue—all leading up to the start of her North American headline tour this fall. I know where I’m going to be in November.

Lola has released three singles, “One Thing,” “d3aler,” and “Not Like That Anymore,” in addition to “SPIDERS” off of her upcoming fourth full-length studio album. All four songs bring such a bold and refreshing fearlessness to the alt-rock/alt-pop music scene. Pushing boundaries, unapologetically and authentically, and with a bit of cheek. At just 24 years old, Lola’s career is just beginning and already leaving a permanent mark on the world. At the rate she is going, her next headline tour could very well reach stadiums across the country!
