Behind the song: “shoreline” by Chloe Moriondo – Interview

One hour before her first-ever show in Paris at Les Étoiles, I had the opportunity to sit down for a special interview with the equally special artist Chloe Moriondo, who uses she/they pronouns.

Chloe told me how excited she was to finally perform in Paris and to kick off her oyster tour in Europe. They’ve been to Europe before and expressed how much they love it here.

In this interview, I wanted to focus on her song “shoreline,” which is part of their latest album oyster, released on March 28. Chloe shared intimate details about how the track was born, describing it as “very cathartic and very vulnerable in many ways to me. It was definitely an outpour after a really horrific heartbreak that I went through in the beginning of 2023.” For Chloe, being able to share the song live now, in spaces where she feels comfortable opening up, feels healthier and has helped her understand and process those emotions.

“shoreline” was the first single they released from oyster after a long break from putting out music. While it wasn’t the first song written for the album — it was the more upbeat title track “oyster” — Chloe explained that “shoreline” felt like the most honest and vulnerable way to reintroduce herself. It gave fans who had been waiting for her to release anything or tour, a return with what she calls “a slight hard truth.”

She wrote the entire song herself, and her favorite lyric is, “I miss you, I’m bitter, but not all the time.” Though she came up with the lyrics herself, she collaborated with another Chloe — Chloe Kraemer — on the production. Laughing about the “double Chloes in the room” she emphasized how Kraemer welcomed her ideas: “She was very good with building the world around what I wanted to say and how I felt that day. So it feels very much fully written by me, but created together with Chloe Kraemer.”

When it comes to production, even if she started making songs in her room, Chloe admitted she doesn’t consider herself “much of a production wizard.” She isn’t hands-on with the technical side. Still, she remains deeply involved in the process, listening closely to every step and deciding what feels right.

I asked her about oyster, because as a long-time listener, I’ve watched her artistry grow so much, and this album feels very her. She agreed: “oyster means the entire world to me, it feels like my most mature and most well-rounded and vulnerable project.” Even though she knows she’s not a hundred percent objective — “Of course, I’m always biased to my most recent album, so I love it the most currently” — she feels she tried new themes and concepts and tied them together cohesively, and it worked. oyster is a whole world in itself and a beautiful artistic journey, and it really feels like her most complete project to this day.

As their sound has evolved over the years, Chloe now describes their music as “a strange, bubbly, alternative pop,” which, honestly, feels spot on.

Just last week, Chloe released a brand-new single, “girls with gills.” When I asked whether it marked the start of a new era already, she laughed: “I always have more things coming, that’s for sure. But for right now I have a few more things up my sleeve from oyster era.” For now, she’s happy to keep exploring this watery world a little longer before diving into the next chapter, “but not just yet.”
