The Australian duo Royel Otis is quickly becoming one of the year’s breakout acts. After teasing us with a string of singles — “Car,” the shimmering “Moody,” which has spent seven weeks atop the Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart, and “Say Something,” which they performed live on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” — the band has finally delivered their new album Hickey. And it’s everything fans were hoping for.
The record is filled with lingering melodies, dreamy guitar-driven indie rock, and lyrics that feel both intimate and universal. At its core, Hickey is a portrait of young love, capturing its beauty, its lightness, and its inevitable messiness. Royel Otis manages to balance all of these contradictions without ever losing their charm.
Highlights abound: “Come on Home” dwells on the ache of letting go and the delusions that often accompany the end of a relationship, while “More to Lose” is a heartfelt anthem about the fear of losing someone you already have because you care too much. Then there’s “Who’s Your Boyfriend Now,” which tackles the bittersweet complexity of staying friends with someone you wish was more, a story brought to life visually in its music video directed by Lauren Dunn and starring “The Summer I Turned Pretty’s” Lola Tung. And the momentum doesn’t stop with the album. Royel Otis has just announced the U.K. leg of their “Meet Me in the Car” tour, with a few dates across Manchester, London, and Glasgow. It’s the perfect chance for fans to experience Hickey live! All tickets informations here.
