Postmodern Jukebox brings swing to Albuquerque with the Magic & Moonlight tour

As usual, I once again bring you something different from the music world. This last week, I went to the historic KiMo Theater in Albuquerque and watched a fun and entertaining music group, Tom Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, with their “Magic & Moonlight Tour.” They put a whole new twist on today’s songs played with yesterday’s melodies. They started out doing music in a basement in Queens, New York. Now, they have expanded to over 70 rotating artists that have performed on over six continents – singers, dancers, and musicians.

Entering this historic theater, which has a beautiful history behind it, you are greeted by Indigenous motifs with statues, cravings, and painting. Over the years, the theater was many things, but it was restored to its original grandeur after the city purchased the building in 1977, with continuous renovations over the years since then. The small intimate setting makes you feel as if you are in the living room of your favorite artist as they perform.

The stage was set up like an old 1920 nightclub theme, with some of the musicians standing behind podiums as seen in many big band performances. All the musicians were dressed in the same style, with a host who sang and entertained the crowd during costume changes. The songs ranged from top hits from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and 2000’s. Three female singers, a tap dancer, and full band brought you something different during the performance, with many of the musicians stepping forward to sing as well. The talent on stage was so diverse and professional it was a full night of entertainment. You walked out of the performance humming a modern song with a classic big band sound in your head.

With 31 albums released since 2013, you are clearly in for a long sit – or, if you prefer, dance – with some great tunes now heard with a different sound. Look on social media and any streaming services for their latest. They host a weekly song on YouTube – go check them out.
