moony serves (cont.) and takes Columbus for a ride at Spacebar

Indie artist moony ends his “(cont.) tour” with Boy Bandicoot and The Doozers in Columbus, Ohio, at the Spacebar.

Every once in a while, I get to talking with my friend G.G., and we get on the topic of philosophy. We typically end up talking about the meaning of life, or more specifically, what makes it worth living. For moony fans, “that’s what I do to keep my brain fresh.” It’s quite a puzzling conversation topic that I think everyone has a different answer to. For me personally, it’s getting to see live shows like this one that ultimately transform an entire person’s life, even if just for a 45-minute set.

moony is a Nashville-based indie artist known for being weird and puzzling, but also not being afraid to dive into a more taboo subculture through his music. Keeping heavy topics weird and mystical while also being playfully on the nose is what I’d call his specialty.

My history with moony starts last year when he released his debut album, Warning High Cube. I found it on TikTok and became obsessed immediately. I missed out on that tour, but with the release of his newest EP (cont.), moony and fans got a chance to complete the lunar cycle of the theme and witness songs from both the album and the EP with a couple of surprises hidden in between.

For this tour, he brought along artists The Doozers and Boy Bandicoot – both of which I was previously familiar with, and I was very excited to see how the night would play out.

The Doozers kicked off the night and slowly got the crowd warmed up with some indie vibes that brought out the dance bug in me. A couple of us started the macarena in the front row with incredibly incorrect timing which started the night off on the right foot. The Doozers were a great addition to the lineup, and they did a wonderful job of cracking that first shell of crowd shyness before the next bands followed.

My favorite tidbit of lore about this tour comes into play here. moony and his band actually also played for Boy Bandicoot’s set, so everyone essentially played two sets in a row, which speaks incredible volumes to their endurance as performers. During the entire set, there was not a single moment where my thoughts drifted. Everyone was engaged and having a great time, including the entire line of people that was doing the macarena at one point. If there’s one thing I can say for certain, it’s that Boy Bandicoot knows how to put on a show that will get your feet moving and head shaking.

Following that, it’s incredibly silly watching a whole band walk off stage and then proceed to walk back on twenty minutes later, but that’s exactly what happened when moony stepped onto the stage. I was thoroughly impressed by just how theatrically intricate his shows are. With costume changes, themed crowd interactions, and multiple changes from recorded songs, I was left guessing what would happen at every turn, and it was thrilling. He played a combination of new and old songs as well as the newest collab songs with fellow artist Cory Hale, which was a wonderful treat.

Between meeting several fantastic fellow moony fans and bringing my own friends along for the ride, this show truly took my life and transported it into a magic world full of wacky and whimsical beats where the rest of life’s troubles just melted away into the bass line.

Columbus was the finale of the “(cont.) tour” and, in my opinion, was the epitome of what it’s like to put on your best show and see the energy being reciprocated tenfold. And while I was standing there front and center listening to the words I memorized being sung back to me live, surrounded by friends and strangers who all came together for one singular night, the conversation I had with my friend popped back into my head. And I had my answer. I started this job because I knew concerts were the place I belonged, and being in the pit for the final show of this tour, I couldn’t have been closer to where I belonged if I tried.
