Wolf Alice releases third single “White Horses” with lead vocals from Joel Amey

It is shaping up to be a very exciting fall for British alt rock group Wolf Alice. With the release of their third single, “White Horses,” off of their forthcoming album The Clearing, due to be released August 22, 2025, and a massive 44-stop tour throughout North America, Europe, and the U.K. from September to December, Wolf Alice has been busy to say the least. We are sure to see a lot from this North London quartet in the coming weeks.

Formed in 2010 by lead vocalist Ellie Rowsell and guitarist Joff Oddie, Wolf Alice has become known for their versatility in their discography which spans across genres like grunge, punk, synth-pop, folk-pop, and more. This latest release seems to push the envelope even more. “White Horses” is written by Joel Amey, who also takes lead vocals on this track. Joel has always been a voyager. From joining Wolf Alice in 2012, touring the world in his twenties, not knowing the real origin of his family- both his mother and his aunt were adopted- Joel has been on a journey of sorts to discover who he is and where he belongs. This track rolls all of those feelings of chaos, questions, and discoveries into one beautiful song.

Starting out with strumming guitars, smashing drums, and an array of bass and guitar sounds, “White Horses” seems to be an exploration of krautrock, 1960’s-1970’s German rock. Joel’s calming voice emerges with stacked vocals. His voice builds a base almost immediately with powerful lines like “I don’t need to solve my unknown identity, just need an answer to the question in the taxi” and “my choice to choose who I embrace as family.” It’s clear Joel is creating a safe space for those who have chosen family and may have experienced anguish about their heritage and family origin. Answering the question, “Where do I belong?” Well, you get to choose.

With a harmonious duet between Ellie and Joel that builds after about a minute into it, the song seems to wrap both vocals intertwined together like a beautiful hug from a loved one. Almost saying “It’s okay. I’m here.” There’s a lyric that repeats, “let the branches wrap their arms around me,” which is exactly how this song feels, experiencing the ebbs and flows of life with friends and loved ones who will always support you and have your back. Not only is “White Horses” a powerful introspective track, it also contains catchy lyrics and an upbeat melody, all of which make it easy to listen to multiple times on repeat.

My first introduction to Wolf Alice was actually only a few years ago, which I am almost embarrassed to admit given their grammy nominations and critically acclaimed music. Wolf Alice is a force. Ellie, Jeff, Theo, and Joel are not afraid to take risks, and time after time create something incredibly cool, transcending across multiple genres, and inspiring a dedicated fanbase across the world. “White Horses” is a perfect example of their experimentation in music and ability to mesh emotional lyricism with great sound. Since their return to Instagram and the release of “Bloom Baby Bloom,” along with its music video, there has been a buzz about Wolf Alice and their upcoming album, The Clearing. And with each new single, the anticipation for its release only builds.

Having performed around the world on multiple sold-out headlining tours, supported big artists like pop-icon Harry Styles, and gracing numerous festival stages, Wolf Alice is a live performance you do not want to miss!
