Dreadnoughts, a polka sea shanty punk band from Vancouver, is getting ready to release their next album in September 2025. On July 11, they released a second single from the upcoming Polka Pit album. This song is titled “Sierra,” a sea shanty that is a fun journey of a lovesick sailor that comes across a fishing girl and his desire to court her.
While the sailor is sitting on the dock, he sees this girl sail up and get off her boat with a fish. Sierra is shy, and just smiles and runs away. Then, one day, he sees the darling Sierra sitting on the dock and he boldly walks up to her, takes her by her hand, and declares her to be his. The affair is a whirlwind relationship, but as with all perfectly ended stories we expect, the sailor finds himself lying at the bottom of the sea with the last memories of his love, Sierra.
This song is a little different from their other songs, which usually speak of nights of drinking and carousing in bars, picking up women from whatever port they travel to, singing about their drinking friends they have met along the way. An interesting fact about Dreadnoughts is that they started out singing in pubs to pay for their tab of Fireball shots they drank that night. Now, 15 years later—with six albums, two EPs, and hundreds of gigs all over the world—they’re still able to pay their tab at every establishment that hasn’t thrown them out.
Look out for their newest release, “Sierra,” out now, and the coming new album, Polka Pit. If you are curious, I suggest you check them out. You will soon be a fan and request for them to come to your town.
