Denmark’s own BAEST is back—and this time, they’re swinging with something louder, looser, and way bigger than before. Their fourth full-length record, Colossal, lands August 15 via Century Media Records, and it’s exactly what the name promises: massive riffs, full-throttle energy, and a love letter to the spirit of classic heavy metal.
To kick things off, the band just dropped the roaring new single “King of the Sun,” featuring a guest spot from Danish rock legend Jesper Binzer of D-A-D. The video—shot by Johan Nagstrup and Christian Constantin Pontoppidan—is out now and brings the song’s gritty, sun-soaked vibe to life.
Over the last decade, BAEST built their name in the European death metal scene with albums like Danse Macabre and Necro Sapiens—tight, brutal, and unapologetically heavy. But Colossal is a turning point. Written during the chaos of lockdown and shaped over the past two years, this record taps into something different. It’s still sharp-edged and aggressive, but it’s also groovier, catchier, and more honest to who they are right now.
“We realized we just wanted to make music that was fun to play,” says guitarist Svend Karlsson. “It’s what we grew up on—Zakk Wylde, Ozzy, Metallica, all that stuff. This record is about letting that side out, unapologetically.”
Colossal is produced by Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Heaven Shall Burn) at Antfarm Studio, and it sounds like a band fully leaning into their instincts. From the anthemic title track to the Iron Maiden-meets-death-metal closer “Depraved World,” this is BAEST throwing the rulebook out and chasing what feels good. There are shades of ‘80s metal, classic rock, and even a few left hooks fans might not expect—but it all hits with the same fire and grit that made BAEST a household name in heavy music.
And they’re not slowing down. After teasing this new direction with “Colossus” and “Imp Of The Perverse” in 2024, Colossal marks the true beginning of the band’s next era.
“We know it might not be what every death metal fan expects,” adds Karlsson, “but it’s the most ‘us’ we’ve ever sounded. It’s heavy, it’s fun, it’s rock ‘n’ roll in its rawest form—and we can’t wait to bring it to the stage.”
