Portland does it again.
I headed out to Mississippi Studios for Forty Feet Tall’s single release show and walked into a lineup that could’ve easily been its own mini festival. With support from Spoon Benders and Kulululu, this wasn’t just a concert—it was a full-blown sensory trip.
FORTY FEET TALL
Let’s start with the headliners. Forty Feet Tall are magnetic. I’d never seen them live before, but I’d heard enough to know I was in for something good—and they completely blew past any expectations I had. Their energy was high voltage from the first note to the last.
Their new single, “Paystub,” hit hard—urgent and unapologetically bold. You could feel their energy pulsing through the crowd. They demanded everyone’s attention and gave it right back.
It’s clear this band is on a serious upward trajectory, and I’m officially a fan for life. I’m so proud we have such amazing bands like this in Portland.
I’m pretty much obsessed now.
SPOON BENDERS
Spoon Benders took the stage and melted our collective faces off. This was my second time seeing them and honestly, I feel like I’ve been depriving myself by not catching every show they’ve played in town. Their energy is dangerous—in the best way. Chaotic, tight, and hypnotic. They’re almost too cool to photograph, like if I blinked, I’d miss something iconic. They live in that space where garage rock, psych, and punk collide in a glorious mess. I hope I never miss another set.
KULULULU
And opening the night? Kulululu. I’d seen clips online and kind of knew what I was getting into… but seeing them live is something else entirely. They’re weird. They’re wild. They’re absolutely my kind of chaos. Theatrical, noisy, unpredictable—in the best possible way. I’m Kulululu about Kulululu. There’s no band like them, and their set primed the room for everything that followed.
