Even after a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden last year, Mt. Joy continue to push boundaries with the release of their fourth studio album Hope We Have Fun. The album’s 13 tracks are a series of reflections, with heartfelt commentary on love, grief, and everything in between. They lyrically traverse through all the ups and downs of their journey as a band, all with an airy, free-spirited indie rock sound like driving with the windows down into a summer sunset.
Mt. Joy showed off their range in a succession of singles over the last several months, the folksy guitar of “Highway Queen” and the impactful burst of emotion on “More More More” mirroring the triumphs and struggles of the band’s past year. Another highlight of the album is the contemplative track “Lucy,” inspired by a friend of the band’s who was diagnosed with brain cancer. In the face of pain and grief, Mt. Joy stand strong, mourning what is lost but finding the strength to go on, declaring titular Lucy a “badass.” The band puts their words to action through a partnership with the American Brain Tumor Association, donating a portion of all proceeds from the song to the fight against cancer.
Hope We Have Fun also sees Mt. Joy collaborate with talented singer-songwriters, featuring appearances by Gigi Perez on “In the Middle,” Nathaniel Rateliff on “Wild and Rotten,” and Maren Morris on a previously-released version of “Highway Queen.”
This summer, Mt. Joy embarks on a headlining tour with some of their biggest shows yet, playing at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Governor’s Ball. Find tour info here, and stream Hope We Have Fun, out now.
