Friday, May 30, Luke Bryan preformed in Central Jersey with George Birge, Drake Milligan, and Avery Anna. Each performance was as enthralling as the next. Avery Anna kicked off the concert as the crowd started to settle in. She preformed many of her songs; however, her recent hit with Sam Barber, “Indigo,” got everyone singing. Avery was very interactive with her audience and serenaded a few people in the front row. You could feel the connection between Anna and her band. For an up-and-coming artist, she has the sound, personality, and vibe down.
Coming on the stage like the “King of Rock and Roll” himself, Drake Milligan opened up his set with a melody that included Elvis Presley’s “Blue Suede Shoes.” Milligan owned that stage with his dynamite dance moves straight out of the ’50s and ’60s. His style could be described as western with a classic oldies flare. His voice deep, rich and enticing. Overall, his performance was phenomenal. Definitely an artist I would go see again.
Following Drake Milligan, George Birge was the final opener before Luke Bryan. Concertgoers went crazy for him the second he stepped on the stage. His style was contemporary country with influences from different music styles. For example, you can hear the blues influences in his song “Mind on You.” He’s got a modern approach to country music that even the oldest country fan would adore.
Then finally, the main event, Mr. Luke Bryan. He’s a man of many trades: country singer, “American Idol” judge, and, from what we learned, a dancing king. Bryan was jumping around all over the stage, giving a shimmy here and there. Of course he preformed his big hits like “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)“ and “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset,” but the one song that stuck out to me the most was “Drink a Beer.“
The lights dimmed down and cellphone flashlight lighters came out. The people near me shed a tear; I won’t lie, I was emotional too. This song is about the moment you find out someone close to you passed away, and it definitely hit home for many of those attending the concert. Surly enough, after this memorial, the upbeat music came back and everyone got down to one of the ultimate summer songs, “One Margarita.” I’ve had the pleasure of attending Luke Bryan concerts many times – each show better than the next. This was no exception. The country twang in his voice just makes you want to boogie.
Overall, the curated list of performers was outstanding. The concert was a hit and the rain held out for the end of the show. Each artist was unique, yet in line with each other.
