Liv del Estal at La Maroquinerie: where rave meets tenderness

La Maroquinerie’s energy shifted on June 3 as Liv del Estal took the stage. With her hybrid sound blending acid, techno, trance, and D&B, she completely wrecked the crowd. The venue was sold out, and hundreds of fans were ready to dance out of their minds.

But before her, it was her friend estomac who opened the night with a techno-infused set that did its job warming up the room. The production was solid, with steady beats and well-paced build-ups, but lyrically, it leaned heavily into intentional absurdity that didn’t quite land for me. His style seems to embrace irony and randomness, throwing out lines that felt more like inside jokes than actual songs. While some in the crowd were into it, I found it hard to connect.

That said, his stage presence was engaging and playful, and he interacted with the crowd with a confidence that held attention. While his set didn’t quite land for me, being Liv’s friend and the energy he brought definitely contributed to the night’s atmosphere.

After the opener, the crowd’s energy remained high, eagerly awaiting Liv’s arrival. As anticipation filled the room, a technical issue delayed the start. Messes Basses, Liv’s drummer—who also handled electronic pads loaded with acid tones and textures—joined forces with La Maroquinerie’s team to fix the problem. About ten minutes later, everything was up and running, and the show finally kicked off.

Liv started her set with her iconic track “kama sutra” followed by her 2024 single “Space Invaders.”

After a wave of applause and thanking everyone for being there, she introduced her third song, “casse-toi,” asking the crowd to join in for the chorus. In French, it goes: “Casse-toi j’veux pas parler avec toi, tu m’intéresses pas,” which translates to “Fuck off, I don’t want to talk to you, I’m not interested.” She asked the audience to scream it while holding up their middle fingers, as a way to cleanse any bad energy.

For the next part of her set, Liv brought out two of her friends on stage. estomac returned to join her for “tellement que jmen fiche 🙂” and later, Zaoui stepped in for a duet for “Danger BB,” which might be an unreleased track. Both songs brought everything we could hope for in a live duet: chemistry, contrast, and a shared joy that lit up the stage.

At one point, a fan held up their phone with the message “I love you” written on it, and it clearly struck a chord with Liv.

She introduced her next track in a poetic, almost cinematic way, asking us to picture ourselves on a foggy, tree-lined country road. The windows are down, the air slowly filters in, we’re tired from the night, it’s 5:59 a.m., we’re looking at her, we don’t really know where we’re coming from or where we’re going, but it’s 5:59 and we’re looking at her. Then came her stunning song “tue moi,” which happens to be my personal favorite, so naturally, this was the highlight of the night for me. It’s hard to put into words how deeply this track speaks to me. With its soft intro, simple yet striking lyrics, the slow build as the beat creeps in, its dark undertones, and that ravy, hypnotic energy, experiencing it live felt completely unreal.

She then launched into a cover of the iconic 2000s track “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” by Kylie Minogue, this time reimagined in French. Right before the final chorus, she asked everyone to lower themselves and kneel… only to have us all jump like never before. That burst of energy carried straight into “Dis(t)dance” making a beautiful, explosive moment of pure collective joy.

Before launching into “Amour Scandaleux,” one of her most well-known tracks, Liv took the mic once again to thank the crowd, sharing just how much this moment meant to her. Performing at La Maroquinerie had always been a dream, a milestone she longed to reach after seeing so many of her friends perform there. But it took time. She spoke candidly about not being in a healthy environment before and how she had to fight, really fight, to finally make music the way she wanted. And now here she was, playing a sold-out show. The audience responded with a wave of love, screaming and cheering her on, turning her vulnerability into a moment of collective strength.

She explained that once she finally freed herself from everything holding her back, she felt the need to create a safe space, a kind of protective bubble where rave culture meets fragile, wounded souls who, together, become stronger. That is how her project 5:59 was born, and “Amour Scandaleux” is one of the songs that came out of it.

With her drummer, Liv delivered an extended version of “Amour Scandaleux,” adding a long, improvised jam that isn’t part of the studio cut. They played with their pads, layering techno beats, acid synths, and everything needed to get the crowd dancing like wild. At one point, Liv jumped into the audience and split the room in two, inviting each side to show love to the other before returning to the stage to launch back into the chorus, just in time to witness the wildest mosh pit of the night erupt in front of her.

She left the stage after thanking her team and leading one final chorus of the song. But the crowd wasn’t ready to let go: cheering, clapping, and calling her back until she returned for an encore. She came back with “à travers les buildings,” her most recent single, visibly moved at the end and holding back tears as she hugged her drummer. Then, for one last burst of pure energy, she launched back into “Space Invaders,” urging the crowd to go wild and give everything they had left. It was a perfect, high-octane send-off to a night that already felt unforgettable.

Even if you don’t speak a word of French, Liv del Estal’s music is absolutely worth diving into. Her sound transcends language, it’s made to be felt as much as heard. Whether you’re looking to party, dance, cry, scream, or just feel something real, her music creates space for it all. So do yourself a favor and give it a listen.
