Modern English unveil Twin Tribes remix of “Not Fake” from acclaimed album 1 2 3 4.
British new wave/post-punk icons Modern English release a brand-new remix of their single “Not Fake,” reimagined by darkwave duo Twin Tribes. The track originally appeared on their latest full-length album, 1 2 3 4, produced by Mario J. McNulty (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Nine Inch Nails).
A full slate of 1 2 3 4 remixes is set to roll out through 2025, with contributions from Hugo Burnham (founding member of Gang of Four), Kontravoid, Ms. Boan, INHALT, ACTORS, Nuovo Testamento, and Sundowners dB.
Modern English’s highly anticipated summer tour with Simple Minds and Soft Cell kicks off tomorrow, May 16, in Ridgefield, WA. Ahead of the launch, the band will host an in-store signing tonight at Portland’s iconic Music Millennium.
The group’s enduring hit “I Melt With You” was recently recognized with the Million-Air Award at the 2024 BMI London Awards, celebrating over 8 million broadcast performances.
Praise for 1 2 3 4 and “Not Fake” continues to roll in:
“A searing new single which takes aim at leaders on both sides of the pond.” — Rolling Stone
“The cold clang of post-punk guitars and synths sounds very ‘now’, but the veteran band brings a depth and worldliness to these songs that sets them apart.” — Mojo
“Not unlike ‘I Melt With You’, 1 2 3 4 taps into political themes reflective of the last four years.” — SPIN
“‘1 2 3 4’ remains firmly rooted in a 1980s New Wave aesthetic of sharp-edged guitar jangles and world-weary, vaguely sarcastic and gently political lyrics.” — UNCUT

Legendary British new wave/post-punk band Modern English proudly present the Twin Tribes remix of “Not Fake,” a standout track from their latest album, 1 2 3 4, produced by Mario J. McNulty (known for his work with David Bowie, Lou Reed, Nine Inch Nails). The remix reimagines the original’s swirling, atmospheric indie sound into a haunting, deeply emotive electronic interpretation, crafted by the Texas-based, Mexican-American darkwave duo Twin Tribes.
This remix is just the first of a series of reinterpretations planned for release throughout 2025, featuring contributions from notable artists such as Hugo Burnham (founding member of Gang of Four), Kontravoid, MS. BOAN, InHalt, Actors, Nuovo Testamento, and Sundowners dB.
“It was such a privilege to work on this remix for a band of Modern English’s caliber, who continue to create meaningful music that connects with people all over the world,” said Twin Tribes. “Rooted in nature and honesty, this track speaks to the deep need for realness in a world full of illusion.”
1 2 3 4 marks Modern English’s first album of new material in eight years. The collection captures the raw spirit of the band’s early post-punk era while showcasing the timeless sound they’ve always mastered. The album features seething punk-tinged tracks like “Long in The Tooth” and “Plastic,” keyboard-driven melodic rockers such as “Not Fake” and “Crazy Lovers,” alongside simmering darkwave/post-punk hybrids like “Exploding” and “Out to Lunch.”
Drawing subtle thematic inspiration from earlier works like After the Snow (1982) and Ricochet Days (1984), the album touches on issues including the environment, aging, failed relationships, love, and politics. While steeped in nostalgia, 1 2 3 4 also pushes the band into fresh creative territory.

Starting, Friday, May 16, at the Cascades Amphitheater in Ridgefield, WA, Modern English will embark on a U.S. tour alongside Scottish legends Simple Minds, running through June 22. This 24-date tour, produced by Live Nation, marks Simple Minds’ largest North American trek in forty years and will feature support from Soft Cell at every stop. Tickets are still available via Modern English’s website HERE, with a full list of dates provided below.
Modern English co-produced their breakthrough sophomore album, After the Snow (1982), with Hugh Jones (The Sound, Echo & The Bunnymen), blending their signature moody atmosphere with sharp guitars and shimmering keyboards. The album included the U.K. Top 40 hit “Life in the Gladhouse” and became best known for “I Melt With You,” which reached the Top 10 on U.S. rock radio and crossed over onto the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. Renowned for their consistency, Modern English have earned widespread respect as innovators, with younger generations discovering their music and new artists citing them as a key influence. This renewed popularity has led to sold-out tours performing their early albums and a headline performance at the 2023 Cruel World Festival, playing to over 25,000 fans.
“It’s been a big journey for everybody, and our early days are really important to us,” says frontman Robbie Grey. “We haven’t changed that much. We’re still the same people inside. And the original members are the sound of the band; if you take some of those components away, you won’t have the Modern English sound.”
