Caskets release new single “Make Me a Martyr” — An exploration of emotions

Coming off of their last album, Reflections, which came out in 2023, British post-hardcore band Caskets has come out with a single. This track is titled “Make a Me a Martyr,” and its drop is paired with the official music video release.

Frontman Matt Flood says this single is meant to be an exploration of self-destruction and emotional turmoil. It pushes the boundaries on relationships and the reactions you might feel from being so trapped within the toxic connection while expecting a deeper relation to the person. Relationships are so tricky to navigate because we all long for a true and intimate one with someone, but the desperation to feel it often consumes us. We might think what we feel is real, but the toxicity is so inviting that we don’t realize the lies that are surrounding us.

I especially love the line, “Break me down, I’m nothing, Break me down, I’m yours,” emphasizing the idea that it is another person or force creating this other idea enveloping us within and no escape. The theatrics in the music video create an image showing that there are so many “voices” at once keeping us from finding a way out. The way that pressure just builds, and the more that pushes down, the more force it’ll require to break free of a bond. The rawness in this song about being a cry for a real relationship while being held captive in a toxic one is such a dark concept, but at the same time, one of the most relatable feelings that one might experience. It doesn’t even have to be a physical person—it could be one’s own anxiety holding you back. As someone who struggles with imposter syndrome most days, the weight of my own thoughts greatly outweighs my reality. The reality is, we all have something that is so intoxicatingly sweet that a way out seems impossible. The breakdown in this song is so good.

This new track marks a new chapter for the band and a chance for them to continue to push on the ideas of vulnerability and melodies for a catharsis-explosive experience. This song is an exciting start and sneak peek to what I assume is more. I cannot wait to see where Caskets takes us with this new single. Buckle up, everyone—we’re in for a ride. 2025 is a year of new music, and it’s definitely not disappointing; only bangers. Are you ready for more Caskets?
