Friday, April 18, 2025 – Transcontinental deathcore collective Face Yourself unleashed their new EP, “Martyr” via Sumerian Records. Working with renowned producer Joey Sturgis (Asking Alexandria, Of Mice & Men, The Devil Wears Prada), Face Yourself has crafted an EP that musically blends bone-crushing breakdowns with hauntingly melodic interludes, reflecting the lyrical themes that flicker over the fragile line between strength and vulnerability. In celebration of the release, the band has shared the official music video for their track “Primal.” Leading up to release day, Face Yourself dropped their ferocious lead single, “Sideration,” and their latest banger, “Predatory.”
When asked about the news, the band commented:
“We are proud to be releasing ‘Martyr’ alongside the music video for our new single “Primal”. “Primal” is about the shift that happens in someone, when they realize they’ve been wronged for so long, and decide to finally stand up for themselves. ‘Martyr’ explores different mental health battles through the struggles, and the strength it takes to heal. This is our first EP with Sumerian Records, and we are excited to be partnering with them for those new songs. We would like to thank Joey Sturgis for also believing in this project and being a part of it.”

When I, personally, saw that this EP was released, after waiting for quite some time for it, I knew that it would be a great EP, but I wasn’t prepared for how astounding it actually was. Upon first listen to the EP in its entirety, I immediately decided “Primal” was my absolute favorite. It builds up the song with a sample of a woman talking about how she listened to Face Yourself, and how she describes the sound as “Primal”—then the song kicks off. At exactly 0:44, the nastiest breakdown happens and it just makes me make this face and say, “Oh my god, what is this? This really is some nasty, primal sounding music.” While the sound is brutally bone crushing, it just makes me want to punch someone straight square in the face. The lyrics after the breakdown gave me chills.
“They taught me to behave; To stay in my place; A girl that once loved is now full of hate; Stuck in society they don’t respect me; False sympathy just to f**k me over; I will no longer take any order; Your egos bigger than any other; All you did was make me angrier; Don’t you dare think you are any better.”
Being someone whose been wronged time and time again, someone who has had the weights of society crushed down on my chest at times, I heavily understood and felt the emotions behind these lyrics. Not to mention, the absolute killer and breathtaking video that goes along with the song. The fire eating in the video really brings it all together. The rest of the EP is, without a doubt, absolutely phenomenal; 10/10 and i can’t wait to listen to it over and over until it goes top of my Spotify wrapped this year.

ABOUT FACE YOURSELF
A transcontinental Deathcore phenomenon, Face Yourself has redefined what it means to blend modern heaviness with old-school roots. Featuring members from New York, New Jersey, Colorado, and France, their unique sound is as diverse as their origins. Vocalist Yasmine Liverneaux brings her French influence and socially conscious themes into the mix, setting the band apart with an intensity and depth that’s rarely seen in the genre.
With their Myspace-era throwback riffs, drop-tuned breakdowns, and sheer relentlessness, Face Yourself have become a staple of the modern Deathcore era. Their ability to connect with fans worldwide and their tireless drive have made them a force to be reckoned with—and they’ve only just begun.
I’ve personally have been listening to Face Yourself for the past year and a half. I’ve seen the progress these guys have made in that time frame, and it’s safe to say that this band absolutely has rocked my world ever since I discovered their music on Spotify by chance. When I found out about their upcoming tour this summer, I had to mark the day on my calendar to go see this band and finally get to experience the brutality they bring in person. I already know I’m moshing to my hearts content in July.
Do NOT miss your chance to see this upcoming tour they have with VCTMS, Crystal Lake, and Not Enough Space—it starts in July. Definitely grab a ticket, make plans, and get to a show to experience their brutal breakdowns and lyrics that send shivers down your spine—AND BY MAKE PLANS, I MEAN PREPARE YOURSELF TO MOVE DURING THEIR SONGS AND MOSH!
