Pet Symmetry just finished their weekend run, with four dates in Missouri and Oklahoma, to warm up for their tour starting May 9. The upcoming series will span 16 dates in the U.S. with two performances in Canada. Pet Symmetry is the Chicago-based trio of Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It.), Marcus Nuccio (Ratboys), and Erik Czaja (Dowsing). Prior to the weekend run, Evan and Marcus discussed their game, “Earth is Fucked,” on their website and more about their new album, Big Symmetry, releasing on May 2.
Interviewer: Can you tell us more about Pet Symmetry and how it was created?
Pet Symmetry: One could say it was created in a basement, Evan saw Erik and Marcus playing in Dowsing in the basement of Strange Light and told them he wanted to start a band with them. We were likeminded individuals where 2/3 of us already lived together, and started playing music in the garage. We wrote the first couple songs very quickly, recorded them right away and that was the start of Pet Symmetry.
Interviewer: Covid has obviously effected a lot of bands in different ways, can you tell us more how it effected you and if it played a role in the new record Big Symmetry?
Pet Symmetry: Absolutely, Covid did play a role in the making of this album. We had previously put out an album called Future Suits that we recorded the bulk of prior to covid and of course Covid hit right before we finished it. We were able to finish and release it during covid, but because of it we weren’t able to tour or promote it as we wanted to. In 2021, we rented a cabin in the woods in Southern Illinois for just shy of 2 weeks, wrote a bunch of music. After we had written everything, we invited our friend who is a producer and sound engineer Mark Mulholland to the cabin while everything was still fresh and we recorded all of the drums for the album during the those 10 days.
Interviewer: Tell us more about the Earth is Fucked game that is on your website?
Pet Symmetry: Based off of Emogame from the early 2000s and Earthworm Jim from the early 90s, Earth is Fucked is our Pet Symmetry’s take on both. Marcus’ bassist other band Ratboys, partner is a video game developer and she created this amazing game. Every little detail of the game captures the humor of the three of us. We wondered what it would be like in a game if we were launched into space and had to fight aliens, which was an absolute blast to bring to life.
Interviewer: How was creating the “Big Mileage” music video?
Pet Symmetry: About a week prior to the release of “Big Mileage“ we all got together for practice and realized we needed a fun music video for the song. So, we all piled into Marcus’ Toyota Sequoia and shot the music video on an IPhone, did about 8 different takes where we switched our seats each time and stitched it all together. It captures us just having fun and joking around which is really the genesis of this band.
Interviewer: Can you tell us more about this weekend run you have coming up?
Pet Symmetry: We have a long weekend coming up from Thursday-Sunday all surrounding this music festival in Oklahoma called Gnargaritaville. We are so excited to play along side all of the up and coming punk and emo bands of that region and connect with new faces.
Interviewer: What advice would you give musicians that are preparing for tour, and tell us about your upcoming tour?
Pet Symmetry: Pack enough underwear. Biggest advice, is to attempt to eat alittle bit healthy. You’ll have more energy, you’ll be happier which means nicer to your bandmates, so try your best to eat a vegetable. We are so excited for our tour with Pony and our friend Jimmy Montague opening up the show which begins on the east coast starting May 9th. Then we jet over to the west coast for that part of the run with Phony and Diners starting June 5th. We love going on tour and getting to see old friends that we don’t always get to see, we don’t always get to tour so we know its going to be… BIG.
