It takes a lot of dedication and passion to be a band for over 50 years. It’s not just battling producing new music—you are struggling with life changes, trends in fashion, and culture, and how the world is viewed. Both Three Dog Night and Three River Band have weathered the storm, overcoming the adversity. Even today their songs are still a reminder of the good times, and carefree living. At the historic Plaza Theater in El Paso, TX, just before the show, the line reach across the courtyard, the street, into the front of the Hotel Paso Del Norte, a historic hotel just a mile north of the Mexican border.

Three River Band opened the show with “It’s A Long Way There,” before they rolled into an extended “Happy Anniversary.” Before performing their popular song, “Take It Easy on Me,” Nelson set the mood—talking about beaches, surfing, high school proms, 1968 Mustangs, and 8-track players—and the track bounced off the walls of the theater. Every song from that point on, like “The Night Owl” and a melody of “Heartache Tonight,” “Circles,” “Right and Wrong,” and “The Air That I Breath.” They closed out their performance with “Cool Change” and “Lady/Kashmir.” They left the audience wanting more as they exited the stage.

Three Dog Night formed in Los Angeles in the 1967 under the name Redwood, the group release its debut album in 1968, later renaming itself Three Dog Night—an Australian term used to describe a very cold night. After the audience’s reaction to the name change, they made plans to officially change the name of the band to Three Dog Night. Dan Hutton has been the vocalist since the beginning, and the current members of the band have toured together since 2021. They have produced and released 10 albums and was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000.
They opened their show with “The Family of Man,” which jumped into “Black and White” and then “Never Been to Spain.” The audience went wild as they stepped on stage, the energy is still there, the fans mostly in the 30- to 80-year-old range turned back into teenagers for the night. Danny Hutton and David Morgan shared the vocals, both bring their style and voice to the songs. They shared stories and had fun on stage throughout the performance.
Every song brought back memories of when and where I had heard that song for the first time. From “Shambala,” “An Old Fashion Love Song,” and “Celebrate.” Do you remember where you were? They ended their set with the iconic “Joy to the World,” the crowded cheered and clapped and pleaded for an encore.
