Foster The People Presents: Paradise State of Mind Tour (show review)

After a seven year break from touring, Foster The People brought their highly anticipated Paradise State of Mind Tour, in celebration and promotion of the release of their newest album by the same name, to a sold out crowd at The Van Buren in Phoenix on Tuesday, February 4th. The tour is just getting started, with this being the sixth stop of their 28 show run.

Good Neighbours kicked off the night, bringing alternative/indie pop tunes and good vibes to a room packed with fans, many rocking “be a good neighbour.” hats and t-shirts, who turned up early in eager anticipation of their set. The British duo is no stranger to the Valley, having ended the US leg of their debut headlining US tour in Phoenix just months earlier. The duo, which consists of Oli Fox and Scott Verill, released their debut self-titled EP in October of 2024, which included their massively successful single “Home”, a song that has amassed over 450 million streams globally since its release in January of 2024. Their setlist for the evening consisted of 4 of 5 tracks from that EP, as well as 5 other unreleased songs, hopefully signifying that the duo is actively working towards releasing a full length album. Among the unreleased songs was a recently written song, “Starry Eyed”, which the duo has started to tease on TikTok and is so good that it’s sure to have its own viral moment. The duo commanded the stage with such an infectious energy that they had the crowd captivated from start to finish. Although many of the songs were unfamiliar to the crowd, that did not stop them from having the time of their lives, dancing through the whole set and singing along to the songs they did know. The set ended with “Daisies” and by the end, it was clear that fun was had by all. One thing was for certain: those who were not familiar with Good Neighbours prior to their set left the venue that evening as new fans of the duo.

Good Neighbours skyrocketed to stardom in 2024. In the first full year the duo had making music together, their first single (“Home”) was the most streamed debut single globally from a new artist, as well as the fastest and only debut single to be certified Platinum. The duo played festivals, brought their music to venues all over the world, and brought their (mostly sold-out) debut headlining tour through the US, UK, and Europe, most of which took place prior to even having released their debut EP. They made an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live!, released their debut EP, opened a sold out UK and European tour for Benson Boone, appeared on billboards in Time Square, received a Billboard Music Award Nomination for Best Rock Duo/Group, topped charts globally, and amassed over 8.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. After a wildly successful year, there is no question that big things are in store for this talented duo (and they could not be more deserving!).

The crowd was brimming with excitement while the crew setup the stage for the main event, revealing a spectacular lighting display as smoke began to billow from the stage floor. The lights dimmed as the rolling smoke thickened, creating a dreamy, cloud-like feel as Foster The People took the stage, backlit by dancing vertical red and orange LED lights, launching immediately into “Feed Me,” a track off of their August 2024 release Paradise State of Mind. Frontman Mark Foster glided across the stage in his sleek leather shoes, moving with a confidence that matched his bold style as he performed another track from the new album before heading straight into fan favorite “Helena Beat”. From the moment the band took the stage, the crowd grooved to the music while singing at the top of their lungs. It was clear that the new album has been well received by fans as they sang along to every word of the songs, both new and old. Foster’s vocals were so on point that you would think you were listening to the album, and the lighting design and production further enhanced the energy of the show, making it a truly immersive, dynamic, and unforgettable performance by the band.

The band effortlessly transitioned from one song to the next, taking very little rest between their 21-song setlist, which included many songs from their newest release, along with all of the favorites from each album in their catalog. Fans were treated to songs like “Coming of Age”, “Houdini”, and “Call It What You Want”, each one showcasing the band’s signature indie pop/rock sound and keeping the energy high throughout the entire performance. As the set was coming to a close, Foster took some time to address the audience, reflecting on how surreal it was to be back on stage after a seven year hiatus and expressing gratitude to the fans for sticking around. He also reflected on how, in a world where we are flooded with information all day long, music has the power to cut through that noise, connecting us in a way that nothing else can, and what a beautiful thing it was to be able to experience that again. The band gave an especially powerful performance of “Miss You”, showcasing Isom Innis’ talent on the drums before closing the set with “A Diamond To Be Born” and returning for an encore of hits “Sit Next To Me” and “Pumped Up Kicks”. As fans poured out of the venue, their excitement over the performance was palpable, with smiles, laughter, and animated conversations filling the air as they relived the highlights of the night, hoping they do not have to wait another 7 years to see the band grace the stage once again.

The Paradise State of Mind Tour is just underway. Catch them on the road as they make their way across the US, ending March 6th in Dallas. Tickets can be purchased here.
