U.K. singer, songwriter, and producer Erin LeCount released her hauntingly beautiful new single, “Silver Spoon,” on February 7. Rich with vivid imagery and devastating lyricism, “Silver Spoon” brings the listener on a vulnerable journey that examines self-awareness and family dynamics.
The song’s swooping chorus jumps octaves to emphasize LeCount’s message, while the reverb enhances raw emotion and pain in her voice. Lyrics such as “We’re the product of love that we do not receive / I’ll corrupt every branch of this family tree” explore how bitterness and cynicism, adopted over time, can fester and impact one’s future. A driving, sharp bass line underscores the lyrics and invites the listener to digest each line fully throughout the song.
LeCount dives deeper in the second verse, offering an intimate investigation of trauma responses. She sings, “I spilt the good wine, I panicked / A disaster, a knee-jerk reaction / Then everyone around us starts laughing / Is that how it’s meant to happen? Oh.” The situation depicts the singer becoming acutely aware of how her past experiences influence her relationship and actions. While the family of her love interest may approach the situation with understanding, LeCount immediately perceives the situation as a “disaster” rather than giving herself grace.
She continues playing with food metaphors and sings, “Your mother said I’m always welcome / To visit, to take second helpings / I said, ‘No, thanks, I’m so full on resentment / That I learned to fend for myself.’ ” Though she acknowledges she is “full on resentment,” she has not yet found a way to push through the feelings of neglect to accept the kindness she is receiving from others. LeCount eloquently employs imagery surrounding food and family dinners—two cultural traditions and aspects of life that some associate with connection and warmth—to depict how each person’s unique experience shapes their worldview.
LeCount is a force on social media, cultivating a loyal fanbase hooked to her every move. She started teasing “Silver Spoon” in videos on her account, generating a hunger for the song from her audience. In an era where information overload can cause teased music to be forgotten after a quick scroll, LeCount does not have that problem and brilliantly capitalized on this anticipation by posting a demo of the song on SoundCloud before its official release.
LeCount just announced an intimate show in London at Rae’s on March 27. After hosting fan meetups and events, LeCount understands the importance of connecting with her audience and bringing music to a live setting. Sign up for the presale here.
