Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn is slowly becoming my favorite music venue in the city. Besides the fact that everyone who works there are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, the shows they host are phenomenal. In a city like New York where it’s becoming more and more expensive to perform concerts and host events, Baby’s continues to work with small, local, and even foreign artists to continue to promote the love and joy that’s live music.
Estrella Galicia–a Spanish beer company–has been working for the last few years to collaborate in the music scene. From sponsoring festivals, releasing their own music equipment, or, in this case, partnering with local bands in local spaces for a free, accessible show for everyone to enjoy.
The specific group, called SON Estrella Galicia, has been working with Baby’s for a while now to do exactly this. Called Brooklyn’s Rock Party, the free shows have been happening since August 2024 and have featured a handful of amazing acts like Militaire Gun, Guerilla Toss, Balkans, and, most recently, MSPAINT.
On January 31st, MSPAINT, dazy, and Ami kicked off the first Brooklyn Rock Party of 2025! The show was a late start, with NYC-based avant-pop artist Ami setting the stage for a night full of exciting energy and awesome live music. Ami is an excellent singer-songwriter and her performance was just as strong. Her music teeters on the edge of indie electronic and synthpop without minimizing her beautiful vocals and I found myself swaying along to the beat quickly after she began.
dazy, from Richmond, Virginia, is a solo act with the most perfect 90s-grunge vocals. dazy has previously collaborated with Militarie Gun and Mannequin Pussy on a remixed-feature of his most notable song, “Pressure Cooker.” I’d heard that track before but never put a name to the song before, so it was super dope to finally be able to recognize the person who was singing something that constantly made it onto my playlists. Despite being a smaller artist, dazy’s performance was extremely polished and professional. I felt like I was at a huge show with a huge production and after reminding myself that I was just at Baby’s and dazy was just one person, it made the moment even more epic (and based on how the crowd was going absolutely wild during his set, I know they felt the same way).
Around 2 in the morning, MSPAINT finally made it onto the stage. While I didn’t personally know MSPAINT before this night, the friend’s I came with did and watching them come alive during their heavy-rock set was exhilarating. MSPAINT reminded me of an 80s or 90s rock band, with grungy vocals and fast riffs and lots and lots of headbanging. And even though it was super late at night, you wouldn’t even know based on how hyped and excited the crowd was throughout the set. Even after MSPAINT finished up and my friends and I were leaving, the energy inside (and outside) Baby’s was unmatched and it made me want to go back towards the stage and dance around a little longer.
Local shows have, and continue to be, my favorite kind of shows. Getting to see local, extremely talented artists like Ami, dazy, and MSPAINT perform in front of their community just can’t be beat. Live music has the power to bring people together and I’m so grateful that I was able to experience the show in its full capacity.
