Rounding the corner of Brodbelt Lane, I saw people lined up against the brick wall of A&R Music Bar. They were wrapped in thermal gear, like burritos, but the excitement and joy never left their faces as they camped out before 070 Shake’s sold-out show. I was first introduced to the American singer by one of my online friends. 070 Shake, otherwise known as Danielle, has a unique sound, incorporating different beats with a soul-soothing melody and vivid imagery. Not only that, her lyrics make you feel deeply attached to her songs. That’s one of the things I liked the most about her music going into the show.
070 Shake’s style is anything but mainstream, mixing sounds from R&B with gospel and emo influences. She first started out making music in late 2015 and has never stopped since. She has released three studio albums to date, with her latest release being Petrichor, a beautiful word that describes the smell of the first fall of rain.
Before playing her new album, artists Bryant Barnes and Johan Lenox took the stage to warm up the crowd. Johan Lenox was awarded brownie points in my eyes for hiring local musicians to come and play his set. It’s not every day you see a pianist accompanied by a cello and violin.
Following Johan, Bryant Barnes received plenty of love from the crowd. With people shouting, “I love you” and “you’re sexy as hell.” He returned in kind, singing his praises to the audience. Both openers managed to warm up the crowds and get the energy flowing for 070 Shake’s killer performance.
With twenty-three songs, intro included, the crowd was jam-packed and bursting with energy all night long. Jumping and shouting and singing along to their favorite songs. She played songs from both new and old albums for fans of every era to enjoy. I had a blast watching her perform on stage. This is one artist you don’t wanna miss.
