Ten years of magic bundled into two nights. Tyler the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw celebrated its tenth birthday by bringing out some of the biggest names while embracing what made Tyler different from the rest.
NEW STARS SHINE BRIGHT IN THE DAY
Starting the day, we had two upcoming stars Rio Amor and Laila!. Laila! truly impressed me as her vocals were outstanding and bounced perfectly off of her band.
Concrete Boys brought the energy early, starting mosh pits which were some of the bigger ones of the weekend and ending their set by reaching into their back and bringing out Lil Yachty, who was set to perform at complex con later that night.
Top Sets of Day 1
Action Bronson, one of the kings of New York, showed out. Bringing a live band including one incredible saxophone player. The live band was the perfect touch to Bronson’s set as his powerful funky beats got to shine when backed by live drums, guitar, and saxophone.
Sampha, my personal favorite set of day 1, brought out a stellar performance with a beautiful backlit amber background that made it feel as if we were enclosed in a forever sunset. Opening with an amazing rendition of Plastic C 100, Sampha’s energy and humbleness shined bright throughout his set, whether it was his conversation in between songs or just the smiles on the band’s faces. You could tell that they were having as much fun as the audience if not more.
Daniel Caesar, a bucket list tier artist for sure. Daniel is one of those artists that if you see them on the lineup, you need to go. Daniel’s performance was heartfelt and personal, whether it was his conversations with the audience, amazing lighting that made you feel like it was just you and Daniel, or the crowd who fully embraced the set making the vibes even better.
Omar Apollo never disappoints and this rang true for his performance at Flog Gnaw. Taking the main stage, Camp Stage, right at sunset Omar gave a dazzling performance. While I didn’t get to camp his stage, I think I made the right decision as watching half the set from a distance and the other half while playing carnival games, Omar gave a perfect set for embracing the moment, allowing for the audience to take a step back and truly appreciate the festival Tyler put on.
Surprise Guest/ Announcements
Day one of Flog Gnaw had it’s fair share of surprises with SZA, Lil Yachty, Boldy James, Earl Sweatshirt, Sexxy Redd, Doechii, School Boy Q, and Action Bronson all brought out as a special guest at some point. Day one of Flog Gnaw was full of surprises for the audience as each artist made sure to leave a lasting impression. School Boy Q and Tyler the Creator also announced that we would be getting one more Mac Miller album, “Balloons,” which is a project Mac had started back in 2014 but never got a full release.
Conclusion
Day one of Flog Gnaw was special it truly felt like a celebration of a friend of yours. The festival is orchestrated in a way to makes the audience feel as if they know Tyler personally. Flog Gnaw was a celebration of Tyler and of the LA rap scene as a whole which truly was celebrated on day two.
