American heavy metal band, Testament, brought along German band, Kreator and American death metal band, Possessed, on a tour that’s sure to keep you on your feet. On October 20, in Dallas, Texas, these three bands put on a show I will never forget (mostly because the big scary demon blow ups…well, scared me, haha).
Possessed was originally formed in 1982 and was labeled as the first band in the death metal genre. I personally do not know much of their music, but they have definitely left their mark on the genre, as many other artists I listen to in the same genre are inspired by Jeff Becerra’s growling vocals. One of their songs that stood out to me was “Tribulation.” ‘Can you hear the thunder? Can you hear the sound? Can you hear the nightmares that rise beneath the ground?’ Just the beginning alone sent shivers up my spine.
German band Kreator, also formed in 1982, under the thrash metal genre. I am also unfamiliar with their music, however, I was blown away with the unbelievable talents of guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö, and bassist, Frédéric Leclercq. These two amazing guitarists have impeccable chemistry, which makes for one hell of a show. The set design for Kreator’s set reminded me much of the everyday scene in Berlin, Germany, (I briefly resided there in 2016); very dark, ominous, yet beautiful and stunning at the same time.
Headlining band, Testament, was nothing short of exciting. Front man, Chuck Billy, delivered a stunning vocal performance with songs like “Raging Waters” and “The Haunting.” The crowd was also not short on excitement. There were people moshing, crowd surfing, singing along VERY loudly, and there was even a guy in an inflatable costume.
I can safely say that even though I am not well rounded in this genre or with these band’s music, I still had a great time enjoying getting to see something different for once.
