Opeth Kicks Off Tour at The Rave in Milwaukee: A Night to Remember

On a crisp evening in Milwaukee, WI, Opeth returned to the stage for the first night of their highly anticipated tour, performing at The Rave’s iconic Eagle’s Ballroom. The venue, known for its unique architecture and haunting history, provided an intimate feeling, set in an otherwise enormous room, that seemed to coincide perfectly with the epic nature of Opeth’s music. Fans were eager to experience the band’s blend of progressive rock and metal, and the energy only grew as the night unfolded.

A Seated Experience

This tour stop marked a significant shift in presentation, as the concert was a seated event. While this allowed for a more comfortable experience for attendees, it presented challenges for us concert photographers. The seated arrangement created tight spaces that made it difficult to maneuver, especially given Opeth’s penchant for intricate lighting, LED screens, and atmospheric setups. We had to be creative, balancing the need for dynamic shots with the limitations of our surroundings, all the while being mindful of the crowd. Despite these hurdles, the effort paid off, capturing the essence of the band’s haunting melodies and powerful performance.

Show Highlights

Opeth opened the night with a track from their upcoming fourteenth studio album, The Last Will & Testament. The song, “§1”, making it’s live debut, demonstrated a mature evolution of their sound, combining intricate guitar work with Mikael Åkerfeldt’s signature growls and ethereal clean vocals. This may have been slated as a seated, intimate event, but the crowd didn’t use their chairs for long, as they collectively all rose to their feet and continued that way for the entirety of the show. Seamlessly blending classic hits with new material, the setlist included fan favorites like “Ghost of Perdition” and “Deliverance,” delicately showcasing the band’s ability to shift from gentle melodies to heavy riffs. The band’s stage presence was magnetic. Åkerfeldt engaged the audience, joking and weaving stories between songs that added a personal touch to the evening. The atmospheric lighting created a dreamlike ambiance, enhancing the overall experience and really allowing fans to lose themselves in the music.

Support Act: Tribulation

Fellow Swedish band Tribulation opened the night with their own brand of gothic-inspired metal, setting the stage for Opeth. Their performance was a mesmerizing blend of heavy riffs and theatrical flair, showcasing tracks from their latest album, Sub Rosa In Æternum. The band’s aesthetic and sound were a perfect complement to Opeth, with lead singer Johannes Andersson’s haunting vocals captivating the audience. Their energy and musicianship built a strong foundation for what was to come, leaving the crowd frothing with excitement as they awaited the headliner.

A Glimpse into the Future

As Opeth continues their North American Tour, anticipation grows for their upcoming album, The Last Will & Testament, set for release on November 22, through Reigning Phoenix Music. Fans are eager to hear how the band has evolved musically, especially after the glimpses offered during this first show. With their rich history and willingness to experiment, it’s clear that Opeth remains at the forefront of progressive metal.

Opeth’s night at The Rave was a remarkable kickoff to their tour, marked by an intimate atmosphere, stunning performances, and a hint of the exciting new music to come. With a dedicated fanbase and a commitment to artistic growth, the band is poised to make this tour an unforgettable journey for all involved.
