The sounds that came from the speakers at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California, on Saturday, October 5, were like no other. Having the ability to play such intricate and funky grooves yet still remain locked in with each other, like it’s second nature, was amazing to see. Many people felt that way as they watched Crumb play.
Being a four piece, Crumb used the sounds of guitar, drums, bass and synths to take over the venue, putting a smile on everyone’s face. Lila Ramani, the lead guitarist/vocalist, took hold of the audience’s attention as soon as she got on the stage. The melodies she sang, and played on her guitar, fit perfectly with the songs. She played tastefully, only what the song needed, showing how skillful of a musician she is.
Bri Aronow, using the sounds of the synths, filled up any space that was empty, and added so much more depth to their songs. Not only playing synths, Bri played the saxophone, adding smooth melodies to the top of the songs. Filled with reverb, Bri and Lila floated above the drums and bass creating a perfect balance. With this, the rhythm section was equally amazing.
Jonathan Gilad’s ability to play the drums with such a feel while still being relaxed isn’t something that everyone can do. His groves made the songs move, and really brought everything together. Jonathan stayed locked in with every member through the entire set, and never missed a beat.
Jesse Brotter on the bass played groves that fit with Jonathan’s drum beats, perfectly complementing each other. His laid back demeanor was a perfect representation of his playing. Jonathan and Jesse are a good duo, creating a perfect rhythm section for the band. Without each of these people, the band wouldn’t be the same. They all bring a special something to the table, all coming together to create the sounds of Crumb.
Playing many songs of their newest album “AMAMA,” released on May 17, 2024, Crumb showcased each of them in a unique way. The melodies and groves on this album are insane, furthermore proving what amazing musicians they are. The album is 35 minutes long, consisting of 12 songs, which is the perfect length to listen to in one sitting. “AMAMA” is definitely worth listening to, and is a whole experience in itself. Playing many of their hit songs, Crumb sounded nearly identical to the recordings. Doing this live is very impressive, as many bands struggle to replicate their recordings. After playing the first note to some of their most popular songs, their fans showed their excitement by yelling out to them and cheering.
Each of them put their talent on display and left everyone in awe as they finished their set. Crumb left Sacramento with nothing but smiles and amazing memories for those who had the privilege to witness their performance.
